I had SBC DSL for four years. Yes, it was inexpensive--$15 a month. Yes, it was agonizingly slow too.

Changed houses last year. I have been wanting cable for some time due to greater bandwidth. By bundling the phone and TV service which you have to have anyway, I pay $15 per moth for a 6 Mbps connection. It is so much more stable and faster than my former 1.5 Mbps DSL.

Yes, cable can be more affected by shared use (relative to use in your neighborhood) than DSL, but depending what is going on at the DSLAM you have the same issues with DSL.

In my case there just is/was no comparison. My calbe connection is easily three times faster, if not more.

i have a filter on the line for the phone upstairs with the dsl going thru it....that is how it showed to hook it up. that sound right. have changed nothing in a year and really noticed the problems the last few weeks. what gets me is they don't bother letting you know there is a problem being worked on!

here is today at 12:30 eastern

If I understand what you are saying, a DSL filter does on every jack that the modem isn't hooked up to.

Don't hook the modem up to the jack with the filter.

The phone goes in the filter, not the modem.

That is probably how you have it but I cant tell from your post

rehooked directly to phone line in wall.....this is what i have...maybe you can recommend better. i did have the filter coming out of the wall and had the dsl connected to that....it has 2 connections on the one end and plugs into the wall on the other end.

what i did now.....
actual phone is connected to the back of the computer,
"link" connection in back of computer to "ethernet" in back of dsl modem,
"adsl" connection on back of dsl modem to wall jack with no filter.
i have a power strip with "phone/fax" in and out also.....running out of time...gotta head back to work.....

the dsl modem is "zoom"
the actual connections on the back are:
ADSL PHONE RESET ETHERNET PWR ON/OFF

the connections on the back of my computer are:
I-LINK LINE PHONE

any help greatly appreciated.....thanks guys. maybe i have something wrong....but why did it just start getting this slow?

Every phone jack in the house not hooked to the modem needs to have a filter.

The DSL modem goes straight to the wall.

I recommend splitting as it comes in the house. Put one filter on and split the rest of the house from there and leave the modem jack unfiltered.
