Buying a camcorder off ebay???

Is this recommended?

I buy/sell on ebay quite often, but generally don't spend much on electronics through ebay.

The wife has decided she wants a Sony DCR-SR40 camcorder. I kinda let her get what she wants as long as it was a good brand and a hard drive camera. She'll probably use it much more than I, and neither of us wants to mess with tapes or little DVD's etc... Her friend has this camera and loves it...

Well, we were going to get one locally, and could get it for about $550 with taxes, but I found it on ebay with lots of goodies for $559 shipped, and the guy has decent feedback. Would you guys buy this from here? Look for better feedback? or buy locally?

Only $499 (w/o goodies) with free shipping at Amazon.com...

Or $599 with some goodies at (reputable) B&H Photo:

My guess is that the eBay item is "grey market" product, may not come with USA manufacturer's warranty, especially given that the seller is a Brooklyn camera shop. (or likely just a PO Box) It's up to you whether or not its important, but for something that expensive (w/a moving part like a hard drive), I would definitely want the US Warranty and know that I could return it to the merchant.

B&H is one of the best places you will ever deal with online or offline. If you don't like the catalogs, you can very easily opt-out of them at:

Well, we decided to go the Amazon route. Figured we really don't NEED all the extras. I went for the 2 day shipping ($13), and we'll have it in time for the Chinese New Year (which was part of my marching orders)... We'll just pick up a soft case locally, and if we decided we want any other extras, there's always time for that...

thanks!
