Too many keys on a ring...

As you can clearly see, I've posted a picture with 2 sets of keys on a single key ring. The set on the left are mine. They are the only keys I have that I carry with me, and the ring I use to my ignition switch.

The set on the right, are the wife's. She carries every key with her at all times. Most of them are her work keys. She uses that mound of metal in her ignition switch.

I have said on numerous occasions that too many keys on a key ring that you use in your ignition switch to yo ride, will damage it. If your key ring looks like the set on the right....ya might wanna slim it down. As for the wife....*sigh*....I'm sure I'll be replacing an ignition switch to a Nissan soon.

So, does having too many keys on your key ring increase your chances of damaging your ignition switch?

Well, I've gotten the wrong key stuck in my Dad's van... couldn't get it out even with pliars... had to have it towed and they got the key out, but it really messed the ignition switch up badly, and $150 less in my pocket... lol

Live and learn, and then get a key board by your front door - and hang'em up.

My key ring look like the one on the right. I've carried a bunch of keys around for years and never had an ignition problem.

I know people with 2-3 times as many keys, or a bunch of big key chains, with no problems.

I cant stand that many keys though... I have my fob, truck key, and bedcover key. Anymore and I would be mad lol

I've got 6 keys on my keyring now, and I think it's too many. 3 of them are also small keys. Now, my dad is a fan of the carry every key you own on the same key ring. He's got the keys to 3 cars, house keys to our house, his moms, grandma's, etc, and work keys on there. After 7 years, it just messed up the thing inside the tumbler that makes the dinger go on when your keys are in it. Little duct tape fixed it..

Yes, a friend of mine is a locksmith. He makes a lot of easy money changing out ignition switch lock tumblers because of massive key chains. All the extra weight wears and grinds down the pins inside the tumbler and the teeth on the key.

I count 9 keys on your wife's ring. Mine has 12 keys. My wife's key chain is much heavier than mine. Neither of us have ever had a problem with the ignition switch. Her current car has 90,000 miles. My truck has 115,000.

I've heard of ignition switches failing on high mileage vehicle, but I've seen many chains way worse than your wifes.

So your light chain and extra consideration for all things mechanical will allow your ignition switch to last 500,000+ miles. Your wife's mistreated ignition switch may give up at 300,000 miles. It's your marriage, but it's not worth going arguing over, IMO.

Mine... ATV lock, Ramp lock, key to dads house, neighbors house (shhh), my house and truck.

Any more and I'd go nuts. I could never put those plastic cards on my ring either, uhuhuhuhuhuhuhuh

I would guess that brains not getting in the way could be a large part of the answer.
