Beating the Game...

In the Blu-Ray, HD-DVD thread, Vader mentioned PS-3 owners not having anything to do once they beat the one game that's worth owning... (In so many words)

I hear a lot of that now, "Oh yeah, I beat that game already"

If you were raised in the 70's & 80's, how many people here ever heard of "beating" those games? If anything, you got beat- it was just a matter of when. The video games were the "no armed" bandits back in the day.

You never heard of anyone beating:

Pac-Man
Ms Pac Man
Zaxxon
Donkey Kong

Or any game from back then. The game just kept going until you lost, gave up, or your mother made you turn it off.

The first game I ever "beat" was Super Mario Brothers- when I rescued the Princess on board 8 - 8. I bet if I played that game today, I could rescue the princess (via warps) in under 20 minutes, and I haven't played it in probably more than a decade. But, before you rescued the Princess, you got your butt handed to you- many a time...

Now people beat games routinely...

Talk about grabbing the low hanging fruit.

Have video games gotten too easy?

Personally, the last one that challenged me was Splinter Cell. I went in, killed all the cops in the Pollice station, but- could not get out of the compund. I gave up and haven't played that in a year or two. If you know how to get over that fence (or another way to get out of that police station) let me know, I might play it again.

I think a lot of them have gotten too easy in recent years.
I have a ID4 game on PC and I beat it in a matter of a few hours. I beat other games that are recent as well. Back on the Atari 2600 I NEVER beat a game, Circus Atari kicked my butt every time.

I do like that some games a winnable today but I think several are too easy to win...and I suck at most of em.

Its a fundemental shift in the types of games being played now. Its like comparing apples and oranges. Sure there are easy games nowadays, but there are a many challenging games that have great replay value.

SMB was the first game I beat as well...

I'm trying to think of an Atari game I beat but off the top of my head I don't know of one.

In the early days it was just easier to increase the number of critters or their speed until you died. Beating a game just wasn't normal.

I actually think that today's games take it one of two ways...too easy or too dang hard. I don't want to fly through a game in 4 hours but I don't want to have to get on the net for hints or simply get my kid to play it because my reflexes suck.

The new zelda was great...had a few challenging parts, took over 40 hours to get through but never was so hard I just wanted to quit.

Oh and Hersh I think it was world 8-4 to save the princess not 8-8.

Warp in 1-2 to 4 and then bypass the 4-2 warp to get to 5 where you could warp to 7 or 8....I think...

I just downloaded it on the Wii the other night, my kid is having a ball with it.

Well, think how hard todays games would be if you couldn't save every time you got passed something difficult... How many times could you save in Mario Bros???

BTW, I've got a Game Boy Advance (which still gets alot of play time even with the new X360) with the original Zelda, Super Mario Bros. and a few other old games... I love it!

I remember reading something about the Wii having accessing to an ever increasing catalog of old NES games, and I'm thinking... I might need one of those...

Most right now aren't really all that great but there are a few great ones...

I pumped the no arm bandit of Galaga full of my mom's quarters. What a game that was.

I'm waiting on NES's Pro Wresting to be released on the Wii.

I plan on taking Starman for another run with his somersaut kick.

Yeah, I like Castlevania too. I was going to get that one, but the kid begged for me to get Mario 64, and of course, dad got it for her. Man, I spoil her a little much, huh?

Alright, now that I am on lunch, I can start over.....

D is right. Some games are easier than others. Also, some games have a higher replay value than others.

Like vader mentioned, some are hard, and some are "easy" and I use that word lightly. Let's use Zelda for example...It wasn't mind bending hard, but some areas were a little challenging. If it was so hard that it was frustrating, it wouldn't be any fun. On the same note, if was too easy, same applies.

Also, difficulty will vary per player. If one has never played a game from the Zelda series - EVER, it will be alot more difficult for those players. Where as I have played ever one that was on a console (minus hand held Zelda's) so, I knew what was expected of me. Some of the puzzles in the game are a repeat of past puzzles so I knew what to do.

    Make sense?

Dont forget that when you warp in 1-2 ... go to level 3 first. At the end 3-1 (stairs to the flag), you can use the turtle to get tons of extra men.
