I wasnt angry, I was just trying to get him to speak clearly by asking him to speak up.

You will never win and battles let alone any wars with the kids ever until you get married.
I would not even think about punishing or anything else negative with the kid until at least then. Let the mom do the right thing then you can take over as dad when you get married. I see my friends that have been there and they have all failed except one who has this approch. Now they are married and the kids love em.

Im not trying to win battles or wars. We as parents are trying to get him to speak up when told too, but last night instead of backing me she spoke up for him again.

Cool...do you want to incorporate that exact picture, or just use the colors in it, and work it in that way?

Family mealtime together is important. (Sharing, talking etc...)
Everyone should come to the table knowing it's going to be positive and upbeat.
If there is a downer issue, table it (pun intended) until later or before.
If an issue is revealed at the dinner table, addressing it later gives the adults a chance to compare notes, discuss their respective position and present a united front.
If everyone understands that the dinner table is a 'safe house' then the kids will still eat with you when they are teenagers.

I fail at this miserably........... :o

Dinner is ussually grab what you can out of the fridge, shove it in as we go to Girl scouts, baseball, basketball, or any number of things. When we do get home, they have home work and I have work while wife scrambles to get laundry done and stuff ready for the next day and then we all have our chores to do.

Our quality time is ussually in car rides, unfortunatly only once a week is all 4 of us in the same vehicle at the same time as we head to my parents for sunday lunch with them, where we all do sit down at the table and all get to talk then.

Dinty,
Man that is a tough spot you were put in, I'd express it to her. Kids should respect authority, and pay attention to it, not be sheepishly scared of it. I would be greatly concerend about this behaviour too. I want my kids to look me in the eye and speak clearly when talking to me about anything. Ussually I have found when they see the disappointment in my eyes, then a simple grounding is ussually enough. Although they know and I have proven that I dont spare the switch we needed either.

I like it, but will it always say "Dinner time...I'll be back later"????

what about maybe adding a touch of some color on the bottom half...? I do like it, but the bottom seems plain...
