Im not a jerk about it when I have traffic coming up behind me I normally get on the shoulder or pull over and let them pass.

Not so different mileage-wise...
I drive about 30 miles each way (Burbank to Marina Del Rey)
If I go through town, I get to look at all the funny folks in Hollywood and all the lowriders down LaBrea. Takes me pretty much consistently 45 min to an hour each way.
However, because of the fools driving on the surface streets, you have to be constantly on guard, and have your head on a swivle. Too damn exhausting to drive through town.
So now I take the 101 and the 405 freeways. Takes me consistently 45 mins to 2.5 hours each way (most times average about 1.25 hours each way).
The only thing that makes the freeway commute bearable is playing "no, you ain't gonna drive in the center lane and try to cut into the offramp from the 101 to the 405 in the last 100 yards in front of ME, ya jerk" game every day.
I tell ya...today there must have been at LEAST 20 cars trying to cut in at the last minute. All with the innocent "ooops, I almost missed my offramp, can I cut in here?" look on thier faces. I tell ya...in THREE YEARS, I have always managed to get in the offramp lane without having to cut over at the last minute. Go figure.
Oh, wait...but I digress.
Yeah...about 30 miles each way
