Lowes carries 'em... just have to ask for 'em. IIRC, they start under $200, and not difficult to install. They installed one on Ask This Old House's East Boston project about a month ago, so there may be some more details there too.

If nobody around carries them, go to www.grainger.com and search for part numbers 1EC58 (Sentrex) and 4RU55 or 4RU57 (Hubbell). Any of those three should work.

No one seems to know exactly what happened, some people are saying a tree fell on the lines somewhere but I really have no idea.
That would make sense... if the branch crossed an exposed 440 line with an exposed 220 line, that could happen.

Also, make sure you have ALL your electronic connections run through a surge supressor. A few years ago, I had everything except for my cable modem connected to surge supressors (had the supressor, just hadn't picked up an extra 3-foot cable). My condo took a direct hit from lightning. The surge took out the modem, router, and network connection on the mobo. Everything else that was on a supressor (the rest of the PC components, stereo and TV in the living room, etc) was spared. That proved their value right there. I got my money's worth out of 'em!

Thanks for the info Joe. I'll check them out.

All of our electronics (except the sub-woofer ) are on surge protectors. WildBlue satellite internet gave me a really nice one for the computer when they installed my service, everything runs through it including the cables from the dish. The stereo, all the TV's, VCR's, DVD players, our propane furnace and both computers are on surge protectors and everything made it through without noticeable damage. I got the claim form from the electric company today, cross your fingers for me that I get reimbursement.

We have a guy here local who says he can probably fix the sub. I hope he can because Cambridge Soundworks won't send out the parts, they want us to ship the sub to them for repair (not just the electronic part but the entire speaker!) Right, the thing weighs about 30 pounds, I can imagine the shipping on that!! Plus the cost of repair, probably cost more to do that than just buy a new sub!

Sorry to hear that Rose, I hope the power company pays for the mess.

I woke up last night to a freezing house. I thought the heater broke but when I checked the propane tank it was empty. I pulled out my woodburner because I never needed it in the last 8 years. So here I sit 28 degrees outside and 35 degrees inside. I realize it's not as cold as where you are but it is the coldest it's been here for a while. With all the people stranded in the recent ice storms. I guess I am fortunate in comparison.

So here I sit waiting for call back from the propane company. I even called their emergency number and only got a recording. I guess they missed me on their route.

Good luck on everything.

Well the local guy is fixing the sub. Waiting for parts right now. $97, I guess it beats buying a new one. Once I get that back I'll fill out the claim and see where that gets me. I don't think I'll hold my breath.
