Night at the range with the M&P

I put another 200 rounds through the M&P 9mm at the iowa river gun club. Kind of a cool little indoor range (under a highway overpass)

anyway, I didn't do too poorly. I need to score 60 in 10 shots to pass my CCW.

Here's a score of 44 on 5 shots

Here's an 80

And an 81 with one flier that didn't even score points!

In Indy, we just have to apply - no qualification required...

...and the permit just got changed to a lifetime permit.

Having to actually qualify to carry a concealed weapon is one of the BEST ideas I have ever heard of! Thorough background checks are important, but I also feel the ability of that individual to show proficiency with that weapon is just as important.

Nice gun you purchased by the way, I like the look of them. Although I prefer to carry a .40 (Sig P226), it looks as though you are accurate enough with the 9 to eliminate a threat efficiently and quickly.

Be safe out there!

I do think it is a good idea to have to prove you are proficient with your weapon. My problem with how Iowa does it is that we are a "may issue" state where it is up to the Sheriff as to whether or not you get your permit.

That wouldn't be so bad, but there are no enforced standards that the sheriff has to follow in approving permits. It is pretty much up to how he feels about conceiled carry.

I believe that anybody who proves to be proficient and passes the background tests should be approved for a CCL

machgt - Congratulations on the M&P. I've had my M&P40 for 5 months and about 600 rounds. I love it. I was a Glock fan and owner for several years and the M&P (so far) seems like a better piece to me.

I live in Warren County in PA and your permit is a small slip of paper good for 5 years. Background check and they call a couple of your buddies for references. It makes me a little nervous about how simple it is but I'm glad they give ME the option to apply for a CCW. I don't carry very often on my person but I do carry in the vehicle most of the time.

I'm going to try it with the hogue grip overlay and see how that feels too.

I do love this M&P so far

probably going to put another 100 through it tomorrow along with some trigger time with the sigma (that trigger is good for practice!)

Machgt, once you got it approved through the sheriff how long did it take after that to go through the class and get your permit?

Qualifications? Pfft...in Georgia, everyone shoots something, we were qualified since the day we were knee high to a grasshopper, shootin' soda cans with a BB gun!

I need to get around to geting my CCW now that Nebr has it available. About $175 for the coursework, $100 for the permit. Walther P99 is what I have currently, wouldn't mind the Compact version.

Here in PA you pay the $25 and you get the permit. in some counties it only takes 15 minutes. for me finding a parking spot was the hardest part.

Paying a fee for a permit means it isn't a right. the only restrictions should be for felon's of mentally insane.

I think qualifying is BS. its saying that if you don't score a certain amount of points then you cant carry a weapon to defend your of your family's life. Personal responsibility is what should be used. if you decide to carry then YOU should learn how to use your weapon. but if a little old lady wants to carry a .38 snub then she shouldn't be disallowed because she cant get the score. now if she accidentally shoots someone then she should be held accountable.

Do any of the people on this web site take a test on how to write and spell before posting, No. if we had to then I'm sure there would be an uproar and people would complain because its our right and guaranteed by the first amendment. (I know Steve owns this site and can do what he wants but you get the idea)

the class is on the 20th, not sure how long till I get the permit if I'm approved

The permit itself is $10 to cover paperwork or whatnot. I'm paying $25 for the class. I don't have a problem with having to prove you are proficient with your firearm as long as it is reasonable

In Florida, I had to pay a fee and take a class, then demonstrate that I knew how to operate the gun, and the instructor told us he didn't care if we hit the paper! I think it is critical that you should have shot a gun before going to get your CWP, but there was at least 2 people out of about 25 that didn't hit the paper at all (at about 10-15 feet). That they are carrying a gun in public scares the bejesus out of me. Anyway, after all that you send in your application, picture, fingerprints, and class paperwork, and fee to the capital, and if they approve you, you recieve it in about 4 weeks. It's good for 5 years. I like using it as a 2nd form of ID b/c people look at you really funny.
BTW, I have a Kel-Tec .380 I carry quite a bit b/c of it's size, although I like my wife's Sig .380 as well. I wear shorts alot and these are easier to hide, rather than some of my other guns. My favorite range gun, however is my Springfield 1911 .45 with a 2# trigger. Man that thing is sweeet! OK now I gotta go to the range!

A friend of mine just bought a kel-tec .380, it is very small. In Mississippi we don't have to take a class but it takes 90-120 days to receive the permit.
