Anybody do bodywork?
I've decided recently that I'm not going to sell my F-150, and keep it long term, at least 200K miles. So, I want to repaint the entire truck (black) and fix the body damage. There's about four door dings, a hail dent on the hood, a minor dent on the passenger side half door from the previous owner, and a pretty nice sized dent and a few deep scratches on the driver side bedside from an incident with a pole
Anyways, does anybody on here do body work or know anybody? I don't want a $10,000 super custom paintjob, but I also don't want a $295 Maaco special. I'm expecing to pay $3,000 - $4,000. Is that reasonable for a decent paintjob?

For $3,000 (if there is no rust holes to fix) that truck should look better than the day it came off the line.
My father-in-law had some hail damage on his mustang vert this summer. ins. co. agreed to repaint the whole car because the paint could not be matched. Complete paint job including new hood and deck lid was $3400, and I have to tell you, that car must have been wet sanded for days. There is not one sign of orange peel in it anywhere. It is a flawless job.

In a case like this what I would try to do is to think about what my truck is worth now, and what I can reasonably expect it to be worth when the work has been completed, for this example let's say it is worth $6,000 right now (this is JUST for this example, I don't have a clue what yours is really worth).
Then I consider how much money I plan to spend. For this example let's say $5,000, because you usually end up spending more than you expect to.
If one would add the $$ amount that they would be expecting to be spending to the dollar value of what the truck is worth right now and come up with a figure. For this example that would be $11,000 ($6,000 + $5,000). And when it does have 200,000 miles on it, your or any other truck will be worth much less, so this is the best time for it to be worth most in relation to (as a %age of) what you spent for it when you bought it. Once you spend more money on it, that %age goes down.
Once you have that figure (in this case $11,000), look around and see what that amount will buy...
For that $$ would you rather be driving what you have (fixed, worth maybe $6,000 - $7,500) or something else that you bought for $11,000 that might be worth $12,000 or more? I have seen '04's or newer that you could get for that or not much more...
When you look at vehicles you see SO MANY "For Sale $$$$$ (5 of em) invested, will sell for $$$ (3 of em) or best offer".
You lose enough $$ just owning a vehicle without spending more $ that you can never get back out of it.
You would then have to make the decision to could keep what you have, or for the same approximate money, find something else that you could spend that money on, then providing that you let someone else check it out THOROUGHLY and get a carfax for it.
I am not trying to tell you what to do, I just hate to see someone spend a ton of money on a vehicle that they will never get it back (over and above what you will lose with the depreciation of the truck)...
Whatever YOU choose to do, let it be what is best for you.
GOOD LUCK Z!

Painting it IS my best option at the moment. If I don't, then I will sell it, and end up financing a newer F-2/350, which I really don't need to do at the moment. And I'm not planning on selling this truck either, unless I get some rediculous offer on it.
