Truck got broken into tonight...

So tonight I went out to dinner with some friends. Parked right in front of the restaurant, in a well lit parking lot. I was in and out in a little over one hour. When we were leaving the restaurant I told my friends to come and check out the new GPS I got yesterday as a Xmas present from my brother and sister. We get to my truck and my driver window is completely smashed in and the only thing missing is my GPS and its power cord.

What completely baffles me is they did not take out my nice Alpine Deck that easily pops out with the press of a button.

My rant is:

1. I had this GPS for less than 24 hours
2. My brother and sister spent a considerable amount of money on me and I never enjoyed it and I feel bad cuz they might have wasted money...
3. I wont be able to get my window fixed till Wednesday due to the holiday.
4. My window was tinted so now I have to re-tint it.
5. I have to wait for my insurance adjuster to call me on Wednesday to find out if they will cover my tint, GPS, and if I have to pay a deductible.

Merry Xmas...

That sucks bro, I hope all turns out well...

Did you get it printed? The quality of criminal in this country has gone way down, and they probably didn't wear gloves...

Dang that must be a good gps system. People might get suspicious if you are pulling a wiring harness out of the dash.

I didnt get it printed but I also never thought about doin that...
I assume they smashed the window with a bat or something and only touched the GPS...but u never know.

The GPS was nice...but the cop who took my incident report said the person if caught would be convicted of 3 felonies. 1) Breaking and Entering. 2) Malicious destruction of property. 3) Theft over $250

I dont know what GPS no matter how expensive is worth 3 felonies....

its not worth a felony to you or me, but to someone its worth another hit or fix when they sell it for drugs.

i hope your insurance co. takes care of you.

Prints are a long shot, but it's worked before with car stereo jackings... For some reason, in cars, a lot of criminals tend to grab the top of the car with their left hand to get in... Seen that happen twice...But prints are hard to pull of off paint, unless it's dusty or hasn't been waxed in a few years...

I'd also check around the area you were parked in, there are Big Brother cameras everywhere... Good chance someone got it on film... If you were in a pretty developed part of town, that is...

Well the cop said these break-ins had been happening a lot of the last couple days and he said the parking lot had no cameras...It was at a restaurant right off a busy highway

I wish I had a witness but that would be too much to ask for.

As far as your insurance, auto insurance doesn't usually cover things stolen from a vehicle. They will cover the damage to the vehicle, but not the contents, unless it was part of the vehicle. However then your homeowners insurance is what will usually cover that. With appropriate deductible.
Good luck though. Maybe you will get lucky.

You have low life crack heads out there in Boston too?

Sorry to hear this. I know it sucks because they've got into a few vehicles here at my house.

There isn't much you can do other than feel good about yourself because your not a low life loser like the person who apparently can't rise higher than breaking into someones vehicle to steal stuff.

Would homeowners' insurance have any say in it? Maybe you could get some benifit there??? I dunno. I've not yet been broken into (knock on wood) in my truck...

Sorry about your loss, man. I hope everything turns out alright in the long run for ya.

When I talked to the insurance co. he asked if the GPS was mounted...I said it was. He said it is up to the adjuster to determine whether or not it is covered because anything mounted is part of the vehicle which means it is covered. Because it was not "permanently mounted" there will be a chance it isnt covered.

If it isnt covered, I would have to try to go through homeowners insurance.

I really thought my tint would deter theft, now I know not to leave anything in the open, no matter how safe I think the area is and how short of a time I will be away from my truck.

Was it professionally installed? It is scarily common that people working for close to (or at) minimum wage at stereo shops etc case customer's vehicles and steal the stuff back.

Something to consider for a lead, maybe go to the store and see if you can find out if similar problems have been occurring?

Good luck either way.

PS, not sure how it was mounted, but you may want to go "make" a few holes so the adjuster sees how permanent it really WAS mounted
