Toyota Pickups

Have any of you had any experiance with Toyota pickups? I have a chance to pickup a 91 Toyota pickup with a 4 inch lift, 6 cyl. motor for a little bit of nothing. I was thinking about parking the F150 and driving this back and forth to work and around town a little. What do you guess think ?

If you like driving it, it gets better mileage, and it's reliable, then keep the miles off your 150 and drive that sucker into the ground!

I would suggest hitting up a Toyota forum. I remember hearing about some issues of early 90's Toyota trucks with the V6... Otherwise I wouldn't hesitate...

Which reminds me, my uncle put 346,000 miles on a 1989 4Runner. It was a POS, yet every (insert term here) in SoCo tried to steal it. Driver's side door lock was busted, could take the key out of the ignition with it running, passenger side door handle was torn off, etc. He only sold it cause the headgasket blew and didn't have the time or money to fix it. I'm pretty sure he cried when he sold it.

I put about 165k on a 1985, the guy I sold it to is still driving it.
Must have about 300k on it.

I have '98 V6 4Runner now with 220k on it.
All the motor's had done is oil changes, no ticking, no issues at all.

I drive a '92 back and forwards to work about 50 miles RT..Bought it used about 1-1/2 years ago. It has almost 200G's on it and still runs fine. Mine is a 22R (4 banger) which are very reliable. Had to put a Timing Chain and tensioners on it. I have heard of more issues with the V6 in the earlier days though. Finding a Yota Forum wouldn't be a bad idea. I'm actually lookin at selling and buying a newer one. If it's a good price and is still in good condition...Why not. These things have a great resale value.

Good Luck

Oh yeah 22R engine, that's what my '85 had.
Also, I did blow the head gasket at some point, I forgot about that because it was so long ago.

Bought it new for $6500 sold it 14 years later for $2500.

14 years use for 4 grand,
and the salesman was trying to talk me into a lease.

and they werent gentle about getting it outta the rubble either..

and it still freakin ran.. dispite the broken frame

i'll try and find it for ya..

found the article..

in 2003 BBC Top Gear decided to destroy a Toyota Hilux. This was to no succession. They tried everything, and tis quite remarkable how well it faired! They were not aloud to replace any parts and only use simple tools. They had to of course replace a windscreen. They tried the following:

Taking it to Bristol and:

Driving it down solid stone steps at 30mph
scraping against numerous walls
smashing it into a large oak tree at speed (locals moaned about damage to the 100 year old tree)
Strapping it down to a pier and letting the waves pound against it (the straps broke and it was smashed against all of the cliffs and rocks, and carried out to sea, and was recovered 5 hours later, drained, filled with diesel and it went first time)

Taking it back to the Guildford Studio:

They dropped it from a crane
Dropped a caravan onto the roof of it (a trailor)
hit it with a wrecking ball
drove it through a shed
Set fire to it

Hackney North London

Placed it atop a 240ft skyscraper which was blown up with high explosives, it fell with 12,000 tons od concrete, to the ground with a thud.
They pulled it down with an excavator and bashed it about a bit

It took a while to turn over, but it still started after all of that, and went up to 60mph. Here are the pictures. It is obviously sevrely damaged, but is in very good nick for what happened to it.

wait hang on almost got it..
give this a try..

I had an '84 Toy 4x4 and it was the BIGGEST mistake I've ever made letting hubby talk me into selling it. That thing sat for 3 years due to an overheating problem we couldn't figure out, I got in it and turned the key and she fired right up. I miss her
