I need to slow down....

They guy must have been using radar though if he was moving.

I've read for the past two hours and it's answered a lot of my questions. The biggest thing is it feels like in most cases if you get a reading on the radar detector, you're already too late. Am I interpreting that wrong?

Not to rain on the " I got screwed by a dumb cop" parade here, but did you ever think of maybe slowing down a bit to put some distance between you and the woman driving? I know its a pain to slow down and now you might be 5 minutes late to work. What would 5 minutes cost you? If you got paid $100 an hour that 5 minutes just cost you $8.33. Instead, you now have to pay over $200 for the ticket, risk your insurance going up and are probably at least 30 minutes late for work. No matter what the reason, you still broke the law and have to pay for it.
Thumper, same goes for you and your story...what if you didnt get pulled over by the cop but had to stop at the next stop light and the drunk women rear ended you?
Think about it guys, I know you're young and think its cool to drive fast and pass the "stupid" drivers out there. Wouldn't you rather be able to see them in front of you so you can avoid hitting them rather than get caught in front of them and not be able to get out of the way safely or legally? Next time you see something like this, slow down a bit and call the cops. I'm sure they would come out and get the person off the road. Cops are not dumb, they're out there doing a hard enough job as it is. They don't need anyone speeding around because they think they're doing the right thing to avoid an accident...expecially young, inexperienced drivers.
Duke..good luck in court..make sure you have your check book with you.

It's one thing to say, just slow down b/c you're not saving that much time. But it's another thing to do it when you know you have a daily commute of 1 hour and 20 minutes (50 miles) and by going 15 mph over you can cut that down significantly saving roughly 20 minutes.
Once again, I recognize it as a vaild point, it's just one of those easier said then done things. I mean it's like the Blue Collar Comedy joke when his wife is asking why he "just won't stop smoking" and he responds to her "why won't she just stop complaining"; and it's not because you can't, you just don't.

Just don't tell the judge everyone else was speeding so you had to. He'll prolly ask if everyone jumped off a bridge, would you?

Well it was a 3 lane road.
But anyways, you can say that all you want. However when it comes down to either rear ending someone or passing them, I'll pass them. I got the ticket but it would of been much worse if I had rear ended her.
I can see where you're coming from about most of it. Im not going to argue about it though. See ya!
Whats the old saying?
Dont do the crime if you can't handle the time.
Anyway picture this if you will. Its midnight I am driving home from the bowling alley. Im the only one on the road. Driving about 5 to 10 MPH over the speed limit. I stop at a red light and wait through the whole cycle even though no one is coming. A F250 comes flying up behing me. We both wait in the right hand lane. Light turns green so I accelerate (not at lightning speed). About one minute later the F250 is still behind me gets really close on my bumper. As I am looking at him in my review he turns on his lights and sirens. Oh snap a cop. So I pull over to the side of the road having no idea what i did wrong. The 250 goes flying by me, not even changing into the wide open left hand lane and almost hits my side mirror. Not a cop, a Fire Truck (maybe like a chief or something). Ok fine I think he just got the call and has to take off to a fire. Nope gets infront of me and turns of his lighhts and drives the speed limit.
And of course before I can get next to him and flip him off he turns into some parking lot. Stupid Fire Fighter.

i would much rather be in front of them if possible, because if i was to see them coming up on me like they werent stoping, being in a truck....i could go up on the curb or move away. However, if you are behind them and they ARE DRUNK, then what stops them from slamming the brakes...running off the road and overcorrecting and ending up fliped with me slaming the brakes trying to avoid them and then have the car behind me hitting me since they were not expecting the sudden stopping. Or them causing a wreck, and backing up traffic so that no one can get by....i think i would rather just be in front.

OK...same scenario, only this time you're driving in a city. You get to a stop light and the traffic is crossing in front of you. All of a sudden you see the drunk guy you sped past a mile back coming up on you and fast. Swerving all over the place and you just know hes not stopping. You look left and theres cars stopped next to you, you look right and theres nothing but buildings and you cant go forward or else you'll hit the crossing traffic....Hold on tight, it's gonna hurt.
I'm not arguing this at all. Every situation is different. You can be the most careful driver in the world and still get into an accident. Thats why its called an accident, nobody ( in their right mind anyway ) goes out and crashes on purpose. For me, I feel you have more control over what happens or doesnt happen if you are behind the person, watching them, ready for and aware of what may happen. Keep your distance and if you have to slam on the brakes, you'll have plenty of room to do so. Again, just my opinion. We could go on and on with different scenarios. I was just trying to point out that speeding to get away from someone is the same as speeding for no reason at all. It's still speeding and against the law...Trust me, I'm not above it. I do it to. But when I get pulled over, I dont blame it on the cop or anyone else. My foot was the only foot on the gas pedal.

I will just have to take the ticket....luckily that hasnt happened yet.....yet. anyways, what are the chances that the car you passed "a mile back" would pull up behind you at a light...other cars would have filtered into the traffic.
Back to staying behind them.....if you have to slam on your brakes....what keeps the guy behind you from still slamming into you?

Again, the scenarios can go on and on. What if you pass him and he gets pissed and starts to race you. What if he's so drunk he turns it into a game, and passes you, then you pass him and so on and now you're both doing 90mph down the road. What if...what are the chances...what happens when....We could what if until we're blue in the face, ya know? I guess you would just have to hope the guy behind you is sober and see's the drunk idiot and is on his toes ready for anything to happen. Again, hoping he is keeping a safe distance behind you as we were all taught to do when we first began driving...
All of this, of course..in a perfect world....
Nothing is guarenteed. For me, personally...I'm more comfortable staying behind the drunk idiot.

....WAIT...BUT WHAT IF!!!
Lol, fellas we could go all day with what ifs. Each of us has circumstances that would make the other guys plan less safe. For me the safest thing was getting ahead of that car since I was on a highway with a boat load of cars behind me. Granted if I was on a two lane road or near some where with traffic stops I would have done it differently.
Either way it sucks hard core because I bet I'll lose it in court, be out $277, an hour of my time, and be pissed off about it too. Not to mention I go home to recieve a bill from the Progressive saying my insurance quote is an extra $xxx dollars (which by the way does it go up on every ticket or just for every X number of tickets and if so how much), and then I have to listen to the GF for another two hours telling me to slow down and how many tickets do I need to learn my lesson.
I've already heard that once today, I'll update you on Nov 29th but I'm guessing I'll hear it again.

I resemble that remark! I must be young again, because I just can't do the speed limit. However, I don't blame the cops when I get tickets. I consider them road tax - the price paid for enjoying my ride. It's really not much different than when we break stuff on our trucks while off roading
- in either case we must take extra caution not to hurt anyone else, and be willing to pay for our fun...
Think about it guys, I know you're young and think its cool to drive fast
