Habibi the Rat Bastard!
wow, it never ceases to amaze me what people do.
Habibi, good job taking this danger off the road. it would have came apart when fully loaded killing someone and he wouldn't even know it.
oh, the safety chains saved me once when i let a friend hook my empty trailer up and i didn't check it. it also doesn't matter it they are crossed.

Crossing is for heavy loads especially with a heavy tongue weight, but a good practice even on small loads. Most loads, one chain (or cable) can carry in the case of an emergency. The reason for crossing is so that in the event that it comes unhitched while going down the road, then it creates a cradle for the hitch to land in distibuting the down force of the blow on more links and uses gravity to slow or ease the jerks that will soon insue as the trailer slows, then again as the vehicle tries to stop it. Thus causing less strain on chains and attaching points on both the tow vehicle and the trailer. The spring in a retractable cable system acts as a shock absorber to help aid in reducing these forces too. Crossing also allows for slight differences in the length of the chains "with in a few links" and still distribute the load on both the chains as well as thier attaching points at either ends evenly.
No it's not ussually necesary, but the pros far out weigh the cons... no puns intended.
