Internet Explorer vs FireFox vs Opera
Internet Explorer vs FireFox vs Opera
After the thread earlier in the week about IE 7 coming out, I downloaded a copy of Opera and Mozilla FireFox after reading about it here. I had just about decided I liked the layout of Opera the most of the three, but noticed it seemed to be taking longer then normal do download images. So I ran a speed test in all three, and noticed that Opera was timing at 2500KBits/Sec, FireFox timed in at 4573Kbits/Sec, and IE timed in at 5600KBits/Sec. I shutdown, and rebooted, and noticed the same differences between the three browsers again, aswell as tried a few different sites to clock the speed at. Anyone else noticed such a large disparity or have any idea why Opera would clock so slow compared to the others? I liked the layout, aswell as some of the tools, but obviously would not be willing to give up 50% of the speed to use it.
I know Firefox and IE use different rendering engines, does Opera?
I used the extension faster fox for version 1.5 and it sped things up significantly. Last I checked it wasn't updated for 2.0 yet.

Edit this file with notepad. Inside you will see a list of applications the extension will work with. Each application will have a minversion and a maxversion. Just edit the maxversion to say 2.5 for example and put the file back into the xpi zip file. Install the extension like you normally would if you downloaded it. I have done this with multiple extensions like Forecast Fox and others with no problems. Used them until an updated version comes out the "supports" the higher version of Firefox.

If you are talking about FF 2.0, I have been using it since beta 1 put out in late August. No problems whatsoever, and some features that make it nice. Can't say it is faster than 1.5, but in general I like it better.
Edit - Someone has already done the update for Fasterfox. You can find it here.

I installed 'FasterFox' over the weekend, which definately made a difference. I am now able to run FireFox at approximately the same speed as IE when running speed tests. It's ashamed that Opera still runs so slow (half the speed of IE/FireFox)... I think I like the layout itself of Opeara the most of the group.

I don't do the front end so I don't know if there is a way around it.
The formating gets very messed up.
