gas fireplace.. does it produce heat?

I gotta gas fireplace... when I light it up, I open up the doors to it, but was told I should leave the glass doors shut in front of it as all I'm doing is sucking out the heat of the house?

how true is this?

Yes. In fact, Kozy Heat offers three different ways to keep you “kozy”. All Kozy Heat gas fireplaces are designed to operate with a thermostat control. Because our gas fireplaces are tested and comply with wall furnace standards, homeowners can set the desired room temperature using a thermostat and the fireplace will automatically turn on or off according to the desired temperature.

Holiday Myth #6 - Lighting a fire makes the rest of your house cooler - Putting thermometers over the house, they measures the temperature change after lighting a fire in the fireplace. The temperature at the other end of the house went down 3 degrees. Confirmed, it does.

thanks! I guess they r right, I should just leave the doors shut

Clicky linky.
If you have a gas fireplace then you dont have to open a flue right? You probably dont even have one then right? Know what a flue is? I wonder if mythbusters was talking about a regular fireplace where you have to put in your own wood.

It all depends on the fireplace. A wood burning fireplace converted to gas would draw combustion air from the house, just like a burning wood does. A gas fireplace, especially newer ones may have an air duct into and out of the fireplace, it doesn't pull house air for combustion.
Now if the thermostat for the house is in the room with the fireplace, yes, the rest of the house will get cooler because the room with the fireplace is hotter than the thermostat setting.

And SAJEFFC, please don't go there. It reminds me too much of work. The guy in the cubicle next to me has a problem. All DA** day. Fortunately the air conditioning is blowing in the other direction.

I am seeing him going down the the Shell station and picking up a 5 gal can to light that ole gas fireplace.

In this case the rest of the house probably will rise a few degrees as it burns.
