calling for network help... please.........
calling for network help... please.........
Alright I'm trying to get an XP home (media center edition) to join the workgroup with 2, XP pro....
Network= Linksys wrt54G wireless router
internet = DSL modem
Internet works....
XP home can ping out to all computers
Neither one of the XP pro can ping the XP home.....
All Firewalls are down.... except router.
I'm sure it's a simple setting I'm missing but can't find any assistance.
When trying to browse the workgroup from hte XP home I get
"Workgroup Name is not accessible. You may not have permission to use this network resource."
Microsoft says
Net bios is enabled and computer browser service is playing.....
Check and check.. still no go.
Any suggestion are graciously welcome......

I just finished setting up my home network because neither computer could find the other. My problem was that I had both computers in a different workgroup. One is wireless, the other is connected by cable to the hub.
If you have a flash drive, insert it into one of the computers that can connect with the other, then run your Home Network Wizard. It should load the settings, then plug it into the unfound computer and run 'netsetup'.
Voila! It should work. If you don't have a flash drive, then create a disc as asked in the Wizard.
I'm not an expert, but I think that should work for you.:santa:

The Home can ping the Pros but not vice versa?
Strange...sure sounds like a firewall to me...
You sure you don't have some free security software from Dell on that sucker...Trendmicro, Mcafee, Norton, etc? Those security suites have firewalls built in...

Also...what is the user name you log in on each machine...
ex. Home logs in as Matt
Pro 1 logs in as PSS
Pro 2 logs in as Admin...
Try to make sure that the user account that the home machine is logging in as is on the Pro boxes and vice versa with the same passwords...
Did I mention how much networking with XP Home sucks...

Alright got a ping both ways..... There was a hidden firewall on the XP Home (Media edition 2002)
Still nothing in the workgroup.....
I tried using a flash drive last night... no go....

Vader is correct. It's username and permissions issue, not a networking issue. All that crap above is useless. Do what he said. Or just try to connect to the admin share (ie, \\hostname\c$) and hopefully it will prompt you for a uname..

If so please don't go back...
The following entry sparked something.
NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Disabled
I believe Windows uses NetBios for files sharing in workgroups. Try turning that on in your network adapter setttings.

I think...I'll have to look but NETBIOS is only used for computer name resolution in p2p networks...have you tried strictly IP based access
\\ipaddress\c$, etc...
