Ive never really used it but i think it is for when you are towing something and you need the extra higher RPM for some added grunt. also if you are going down a steep grade you can use it to brake the engine, Kind of like a weak a$$ jake brake.

Only lock out overdrive on the 4R70w/4R75/E4OD/4R100 if the tranny is hunting between 3rd and 4th gears, or you need some downhill breaking at highway speed. Usually this happens in traffic loaded goin 50-60. The trans is perfectly fine towing a max load in overdrive (4th gear) as long as the tranny stays locked in OD. Shifting back and fourth constantly builds enough heat to cook it.

On those four trannys I mentioned the OD lockout switch ONLY prevents shifting into 4th. No effect on 1 through 3 like some believe.

Kind of confusing when you say you 'engaged it'.
It is engaged by default.
When you press the button the light comes on and you have Locked Out i.e. disengaged the OD.

The automatic transmission is a 4 spd that shifts automatically.
When towing, the truck may/could keep shifting between 3rd and 4th(Overdrive) depending upon conditions.
This 'hunting' back and forth constantly is not good for truck or driver.

Ford gave you an OD Lockout button so, the truck will not shift into 4th gear.

Ford also gave you a Light to indicate
"Hey! do you realize you are only using three of the four gears we provided, you big dummy"

Light Off = OD on (you have a four speed automatic)

Light On = OD Off(you have a three speed automatic)

Think of OD as 4th gear, or a cruising gear for better fuel economy. Only disengage OD to stay out of 4th gear. This mostly applies to climbing mountainous hills, or towing while going up steep hills, and going down steep hills. Also, some people disable OD while racing to get more pull out of 3rd gear. When you have disabled OD, your transmission won't go in any higher gear than 3rd.

Hope that helps you understand.

If the transmission keeps hunting between lock up, 4th and 3rd gears, turn overdrive off. Hunting for gears heats the transmission up in a big hurry.
