LOL, you'd be surprised... I can mix it up in the Kitchen... I'm no Emeril, but, I can hook it up; I'm not just talking barbeque either, and- none one in my family can touch me when it comes to cakes... But, when it comes to pies, my mother-in-law has me beat... They (Wife's Grandmother & Mother) have a recipe for Sweet Potatoe pie that'll make you bite your damn fingers... Once I figure it out; I'm gonna market & sell it.

My problem is, I don't have time to cook, and- I have all electric appliances. True cooks prefer gas, (better heat control) but- I wasn't about to have my house re-engineered$$.

My cousin David down in San Antonio, that's the best cooking man I know. That boy shouldda gone to school and became a master chef. I have a classmate who is a master chef in San Antonio; I've never beed to his resturant, or had his food, but- next time I'm down there, I'm gonna check him out. He has a degree in Culinary Arts from a school here in Dallas...

A degree in food... Who knew?

Hey Hersh, what's the name of the place here in SA? If it's that good, I'll let you know.

I have no issue with where LG is made, as someone suggested. As I said, I'm from Canada......we don't really give a rat's a$$ about American companies, or have problems with Asian companies. Truth be told, I think the imports cars are the best in the world, and only have a F150 because the Asians have not mastered full size trucks......yet.

Don't be miffed by LG's history. They have very little experience in making major appliances for the North Americans. There are quantum differences between compact washers that are used in europe and small apartments, and bar fridges and microwaves, where they have the most experience.

They are extremely new to making North American appliances. Dishwasher is about 1-1.5 years old. The range is this year, and the front-load "full size" washer/dryers are a relatively new, but getting better.

LG, as mentioned before, has success in targeting younger people, as they are marketed as an innovative brand, with technology being a sell point.

Newbies in the retail business are also big targets for LG.....if they can positively influence the sales floors, this translates into increased sales to consumers. Some whining/dining,and sales spiffs have more impact on what the average sales associate promotes than the average person would care to realize.

So you think over 40 years of experience building major appliances for the rest of the world is not enough? 48 years of electronics experience?

No there isn't quantum differences other than size. Don't you think their Mechanical engineers are capable of scaling their technologies?

They are making very good products and their failure rate on new product launches is no different than the other major brands. Maytags first batch of Neptunes were so bad they have lawsuits to contend with. The current crop appears to be better but they have such a black eye now people are staying away. Whirlpool/Kenmore Duets had launch problems as well but are now pretty solid units. I do not understand your anti LG stance but you are entitled to it.

I never met an LG rep in the 2 years I sold appliances.

But, we did get a lot of cookies and free T-shirts from Whirpool/Kitchenaid and Frigidaire/Electrolux...

Not gonna spend any more time debating this. We both have our opinions on this, they happen to differ. We'll let the consumer decide. In Mountaineer's case, he has already purchased the LG set.

When it comes to technology, Samsung is the one to beat when it comes to refrigerators. With their twin-cool technology system, no other manufacturer has that. We had a Samsung refrigerator (27 cu. ft) that was $5,000.00. This thing was not only a TV, but a detachable tablet PC, with wireless internet access, and built in note pad. Almost twice the cost of the LG fridge.

I showed you guys the Tv-fridge, but I'd never buy anything like that. I don't have the right kind of kitchen to utilize a fridge with a built in TV. But, for someone with a big kitchen, that is still the "heart" of the house, that is a space saver. I know a few people (Monther-in-law, Aunt- to name a few) who has a small TV in their kitchen, because that's where visitors congregate, and that's where most of their time is spent. A TV in the fridge for people like that, would be cool, and it would free up counter space.

People might think it's dumb, but- some people think it's dumb to put a lift kit and big knobby tires on a truck that'll never go off road. But, folks do it every day. Life's short, buy what you want!

Yes, you are correct, that's what I think/know. Very different products, with only the most basic/surface similarities. You approach to that business appears to be very simplistic....as an engineer would look at it, not as a business man would view it.

Yup, Maytag had a ton of problems, but I don't think we were discussing them. Whirlpool Duets actually had no issues with that launch. The only issues they may have had, was keeping enough inventory for such a praised laundry pair.

Pros: energy efficient, cleaning ability
Cons: upfront cost, smell, noise, unreliable

We purchased our duet set in Jan 04. Thankfully, we bought the extended warranty offered by the retailer. Everything the disappointed posters have said is true - noisy spin cycle, a smell like you wouldn't believe, etc. The gasket around the front door is practically a petri dish for mold -- and we have allergies to mold. The front door leaks and we have had the repairman out twice to no avail. Unless he can get the machine to reproduce the leak, he can't do anything. He did say it was probably coming out of the soap dispenser area. We now have to replace our wood floor which is warped. Overall, this appliance set has cost us into the several thousand dollars when you factor in the cost of a new wood floor. I will NEVER buy another whirlpool product and will tell everyone I come into contact with the same. I am kicking myself for not buying the LG.

Seems that the mold issue is hit or miss with the Whirlpool and the LG.

This is why I recommend the extended warranty with Best Buy. With that, you deal with Best Buy folks, and you never have to pay
anything out of your pocket. No parts, no labor, no trip fees...

Peace of mind... I am not a gambler, not with
a purchase of that size... (Near $2,000 for washer & dryer; especially if you get the pedestals.)

But, that's just me...

Yes they did, not as bad as Maytag for sure but there were (and still are) issues. And Maytag was brought up to illustrate the point that they all have problems not just LG.

Most washers ( of my generation ) have no heating in them - the HOT cold and warm buttons just mx the water coming from the TAP

The term cold in Texas is a bit of a stretch since the water comes from the tap at over 75 degrees

Most places estimate water cost for comparison at $4 per thousand gallons - = 4 pennies for 10 gallons. so saving a bundle by getting a washer that uses 10 gallons less per load is going to take a while .. You MAY save MORE on not having to HEAT that water to 150.

Here is interesting study on heats effect in killing germs on bedpans ...

They found that 80+ degrees C was minimum for good disinfection ( 175 degrees F )

I may be wrong, but if the LG model you listed has an in-line water heater, you should not be comparing this against the Whirlpool 9150, but should be using the 9300 or 9400 model instead.....much closer apples to apples comparison:

ps - Mold is an issue with any front-loader that is not maintained & cleaned correctly.
