When I heard about this, I was in disbelief. I still am. It was even more of a shocker to hear "HOW" he died.

I was a fan. I loved his work, his passion for what he loved to do, and the way he did his work. He was an artist to some people. I thought he was awesome. Ever since the first time I saw his show for the first time.

He left this world early, but he left behind a lot of knowledge about the great outdoors, and it's sad to know that most people dont look at mother nature the same way he did. If everyone did, the world would be a beautiful place to live.

Steve, you will be missed.

Sorry for your loss Polaris.
I too have experienced the passing of someone I admired and never met.

Some have drawn comparisons of what he did with extremist like the crazy boys or whatever they are on MTV. HOWEVER, there are several very large distinctions between the two and the only similarity is the wild animals.

He TAUGHT the public about animals we generally knew very little about. He helped expand conservationalism and debunked myths about species of animals for which we had misconceptions.

Sure he was out near "the edge", but he was there in a vastly different manner then the "extremists" some are speaking of.

The real ironic part of his death is that he was not even handling any animals at that time. He and the cameraman took time out to shoot pictures of the coral reef and underwater plants for a TV show Steves daughter has. The attack was a pure accident and happened as Steve was snorkling over the Ray. The fish just freaked out and stapped upward at the big shadow.
Steve Irwin was a professional and knew what he was doing with all the animals. That is in direct contrast with all the 'Extreme' shows hosted by idiots out there now.

Exactly.

He died doing what he loved, and he loved mother nature. He did his work to educate people and sometimes help animals. To me, he was the greatest of all naturalist.

He was killed by accident - just like thousands of other folks every day. Dealing with animals was his job and he was an expert at it. Is anyone else who might be killed at their job crazy, stupid, foolish, etc. ?

I'll agree that the guy was annoying sometimes, but I think he was trying to build enthusiasm for something (animal conservation) that is not particularly exciting to the mainstream public as a whole.

He donated HUGE sums of money to conservation efforts; he purchased large quantities of land for animal conservation; he has helped raise public awareness about nature in general.

As far as the comments by you and others regarding the media-hyped event with his son, the media made that into some big deal it wasn't. He DID NOT hold his son "over" any croc - he had him in his left arm while he held the food out with his right hand - something he had done almost every day for over 20 years.

Every time the self-righteous folks here put their children into their vehicle and drive, they endanger them more than he endangered his son...

Unless you knew the man PERSONALLY, you (or anyone else) are in no position to judge his professionialism or capabilities - especially when his peer group held him in such high regard.

By most accounts, he was a capable, caring professional.

RIP Steve Irwin - you will be missed...
Couldn't have said it better.

Yeah, no schyt...

I was stunned to wake up to this news yesterday...
All this time, I thought Stingrays were harmless where humans are concerned.

I'm not a marine biologist or anything, but, I didn't even know they could "sting", I thought that was a name given to them because of their shape. They'd shown one thrash his tail/stinger through the water when a helicopter flew over it, startled it... That's probably what happened to Steve... In the wild it's kill or be killed, you wouldn't want to startle anything...

Sad to see this guy's gone... Being the father of a 2 year old myself, I'm sorry for his wife and son too- his sone will groe, and never know his dad, other that what he'll see on video...

RIP Steve:

I've always thought stingrays couldn't hurt you like that either, I mean you can pet them when you go to Sea World. A guy caught one off the pier in Huntington Beach, CA. I saw it, and it didn't look very deadly. Apperently in the video he gets stabbed in the heart, and PULLS the barb out
