Mosquito Traps - Anyone Using one of These Things??

I've been pricing mosquito traps online -- the ones that utilize a propane tank and such...

Anyone using these things? What are your impressions? Brands to look at/avoid? There's a pretty big variance on price -- what dictates the price point?

Any info that you can provide would be most appreciated - I'm walking into this totally blind.

THANKS!

how many do you have to trap before you get enough meat to eat?

They're tiny, and require a lot of patience to set, but they can't be beat.

I think you can get them at that new upscale Wal-Mart.

I've got one of these and love it....

Anything that happens to fly close to it, then it sucks them right up and shoves them in to the electrodes.

6 pack of beer + that thing = hours of quality entertainment for the easily entertained.

I have the Mosquito Magnet. http://www.mosquitomagnet.com/

I purchased it because it was suppose to be the best on the market according to several reviews.

I have the Defender as they are based on size of coverage.

I have had only marginal success with it. If you go to their site they have a placement demo. I have moved mine throughout the yard and with varying degrees of success. My problem is my backyard consists of a pool in the center with fences and hedges covering the sides and back. All prime breeding areas for the buggers.

My best solution has been to spray the yard with Mos. killer and use the Mos Magnet.

If I had it to do over again I probably wouldn't.

However, a friend of mine has wide open property and has had great success with his..filling the trap many times over.

I think it has to do with the layout of the yard in relation to prevailing winds.

Wow this got longer than I thought

I think all of you guys need to buy them! My neighbor bought one, and it works wonders and getting all the mosquitos out of my backyard and into his since they are attracted to the thing!!! Now they all reside behind his house and I am pesky critter free!

Seriously though, its just like with those japanese bettle bug traps, all you are doing is opening the buffet line for them all to come live in your yard if they don't go in the trap.

My inlaws got one at their vacation home. I think it is a Coleman, propane fired.

They swear it works great. We were able to eat outside at dusk without putting on any OFF, so I would have to agree.

Apparently it takes a few weeks before the skeeters breeding cycle is disrupted. They have it near their deck (the primary outdoor living area). I was skeptical, but I really do think it works. A few of us got bit once or twice during the course of a week, eating outside most nights. I think without the propane skeeter killer we would have been forced indoors.

Don't waste your money. I had a nice one that was good for an acre which is the size of our property. All it did was attract the mosquitoes from all of our neighbors properties to our place. Sure it works. It attract them. It even kills them. But not all of them.

I just sprayed my property with a pretty good dose of Malathion and a hose-end sprayer and my backpack sprayer. No more mosqutoes and no more gnats or ants or any other bugs!!

Plants are brown and grass glows green at night, but sets the mood....

Thanks for the input guys. I've been communicating with a guy from ebay that sells these things and he's been extremely helpful as well.

Those of you who have them... do you run them constantly or just crank them up a few hours before you head to the deck/patio/pool? He, as well as someone here, had alluded to leaving them on 24/7 so that it's able to disrupt their breeding cycle and such (which makes perfect sense to me). By the same token, I'm not anxious to burn through a canister of propane every week either in order to enjoy the patio -- I know you have to pay to play but, that seems a bit excessive or it seems that there may be a better way.

So, moving this thread forward -- beyond utilizing napalm -- what are you all using to control mosquito problems in and around your property?

I wish my neighbors would buy these. I am concerned about hosting a mosquito kegger...
