Emissions testing

What are the emissions testing for NC? I want to cut my cats but dont want to pay. I currently pay 1400 a year for insurance (16) and one ticket would make it go to 2000. But today I heard in NC vehicles older than 95 did not have to do emissions tests. Mines a 94, but if a cop pulls me over whats the likelyhood he will catch me? I know he cant tell if they are in there, but Im told they are putting the sniffers on these trucks nowdays.

Cat’s are required in every state, it’s a federal law, could face fines if caught without them. What are the chances you get caught without cat’s? Who knows…

Um, actually he is right. It is a federal law that all vehicles post 1973 must have catalytic converters installed. It kinda goes like the medicinal marijuana thing in cali. It breaks federal law, but the state law can vary.

I don't recall NC not having emissions on such newer cars. Unless they have recently changed, you'll have to have them to pass as NC does safety and emissions and checks for the cats yearly. I would take them off, and hollow them out. Then, as far as anyone knows, you still have them. Or you can take them off, have a custom pipe cut and welded with flanges, and install the pipe after emissions testing and ride for a year, then put the cats back on at test time again. Been there, done that. I did emissions testing in NC for 2 years

http://www.ncdot.org/dmv/vehicle_ser...uirements.html Heres the link, help me comprehend this. Basically when I go for an inspection they do not have to put the sniffer in my exhaust. But now when I am pulled over by a cop he can insert the sniffer in my exaust because cats are federally manidated. Am I correct? Or can I not be checked due to an older than 95 (94) in currituck co.

Thats difficult to read. It would appear sniffer test were eliminated in december 05. I don't think that would be right, as most places are adding more cars and making it harder, not removing vehicles and making it easier. I read that they are only now testing OBDII vehicles, which would allow you to get away with it. (note: a cop isn't going to stop you, test you, and check you. They don't want the paperwork)

Tampering with and removing a working emissions device is against federal law.

Just because your vehicle is not tested by your local government does not mean it is legal for you to violate federal law. Removing cats is probably against North Carolina law, too. No testing does not mean you can do whatever you want with your emissions devices.

Also, when it comes time to sell the truck, the potential buyers may live in a county or state where emissions testing is required. Unless you plan to keep the truck forever, you might want to think about resale value.

In some states, if a buyer finds out you have tampered with the emissions devices, he has the legal right to cancel the sale.

Finally, if a cop were to pull you over and inspect your vehicle, he would not need to put a sniffer up your tail pipe. A simple visual inspection would confirm no cats. You might want to find out what the fine is for this before you throw your cats away.

It's your truck - do what you want. Just realize that there may be consequences to removing your cats.

First off if you take the cats off even if you are in a non-emissions county they still do a visual inspection. So if you take them off it will be noticed. Second if you decide to punch them out you need to make real sure that there is no trace of tampering with them. And currently in NC all 95 and older vehicles are safety only. No matter what county you live in.

Dont catch you when you say for safety only. I would not remove the actual cat itself just gut it and leave the outer packing maybe drill or knock a few holes in it eh? How do yall do them?

PA has some goofy laws, but they can be gotten around.

OBD1 trucks get a simple visual inspection. Even if a tube goes straight through a cat, it passes. But still the friggin sticker is like 50 bucks.

Now the 84 has true dual straight pipes. How do I get around that? Classic tags. (20 years old or more in PA with a DOT inspection). Pay for the exempt sticker once and I'm good.

I want to live where your low crime level is if cops are looking for emissions tampering.

if you drive less than 5K a year you can get an exempt sticker but you have to do it every year. i get both my car and truck inspection and emission done by a friend for a case of beer. i don't actually get the beer now i just give him $20. it is all legit and legal.
