Just in case you weren't already feeling too old today, this will likely change that for you –

Some of the young people who are starting college across the Nation this fall were born in 1989 or later, some 15-20 or more years after many of us finished High School.

They are too young to remember the first space shuttle blowing up on liftoff.

Most of their lifetime has included dreaded diseases such as AIDS.

Some of us remember a time without illegal drugs being commonplace. Many of them cannot imagine a time without the same (or worse) drugs being prevalent.

Being gay once meant you were happy and joyful.

To them, bottle and caps have always been screw off and plastic, and many have never seen a can of soda without a pop-top ring.

The CD was introduced the same year some of them were born.

They have always had an answering machine or voicemail.

They have always had cable television.

They cannot fathom not having a remote control, or several of them to operate various devices.

How many of them spent time in a “portable classroom” in grade school or middle school???

Remember those large b/w class photographs from elementary school?

Jay Leno has been on the “Tonight Show” since 1992, or 14 years, for most of their lifetime, but still only a short time compared to the 30-year duration that Johnny Carson hosted the show. Few of these people even know much at all about Johnny Carson, much less who Jack Paar was.

They cannot imagine broadcast television only having 3-5 total channels to choose from.

They may never have even seen a b/w television, or remember when a family only HAD one TV.

Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave.

They never took a swim without thinking about the movie “Jaws”.

They can't imagine what hard contact lenses are.

They don't know who Mork was, or where he came from.

.... continued in the next post in this thread -

...continued -

They have never heard the phrases: "Where's the Beef?", "I'd walk a mile for a Camel", “Happy Trails”, or "de plane, Boss, de plane".

They do not know or care who shot JR and most have no idea who JR even is/was.

They do not know that McDonald's never came in other than Styrofoam containers.

A Burger King “Whopper” once sold for 29 cents, french fries were 17 cents, a cup of soda was a dime – you could have all three for just a little more than 50 cents, or ½ of what individual items on the 99 cent menu now cost.

People bought “pizza” ingredients in a cardboard box, and made it themselves in their own oven at home.

They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter, or what a “party line” is.

They cannot imagine their home without air-conditioning.

They cannot imagine their family car having a straight-shift, or not also having a/c.

Cellular phones are now commonplace, we didn’t even have pagers at the same age.

You now pay more for a car or truck than you used to pay for a rather nice house, not so very long ago…

You now spend more to fill the tank of your vehicle once than it used to cost for enough gas to drive all week, anywhere you wanted to go…

When you used to stop for gas, as many as three people would come out to fill your gas tank, check your oil, and clean your windshield FOR you.

They don’t know about 45’s and 78’s, much less 33 1/3 LP’s, or 8-track tapes.

There was a time not that long ago, when if you made a salary of $15-$20K, you could live in a nice house, drive a nice car, and even afford to fly an airplane if you chose to do so. Now many people would turn down a job offer if it only paid that little…

Few of us were raised in single-parent homes, homes with blended families or divorced parents, or having a “funny uncle” we should stay clear of. These seem almost commonplace now.

I cannot imagine a better time to grow up than during the 1950’s to 1960’s and 1970’s. I would not even want to face some of the pressures and temptations that young people face now while growing up.

Do you feel old yet?

Yep. McD's Fish sandwiches came in a light blue styrofoam box not too long ago. Also Quarter pounder's came in a white box. In fact, they still still use styrofoam for the "Big Breakfast" meal.

I was 26, finished HS and College, and already married by 1975... not so LOL!

I have a good family and a better than average life, little I would change, except to spend more time with my dad before I passed (should have told my job/boss where to stick it...), and to get a puppy dog sooner (but that might have spoiled it, couldn't ever have one any better than the one I do right now).

Young whippersnapper, I have wristwatches that are older than you are...LOL

I'm old enough to be your grandpappy.

But from what I see reading your posts, you're still a good kid!

And I have tools that are about as old or older than you...in the original boxes My great grandpa was a machinist, and when he passed, we got ALL of his tools. Problem was, he was **** about his stuff, and always kept it in the original box.

Me too! My grandpa was a floor sander, I got a tool box and some tools.
Almost got his 1948 Frod pickup that he bought brand new!

Oldest thing I own is several Roman coins that date back to the time of Jesus Christ, and a mother-in-law about the same age as the coin...

I turn 40 this year.
We only had a single b/w TV until I was about 10. The remote was Dad telling me to get up and turn the **** on the set.

We only had ONE bath. I design homes now where every bedroom has a bath plus there's a powder room as well.

We had a one-car garage. Now you need at least two or three car garages.

With shows like the Muppet Show, Donnie & Marie, Real People, Fantasy Island, and The Love Boat, the entire family could watch TV together and there was no need for Dad to explain what Erectile Dysfunction is. The News came on at 6 & 11 PM, and football was on Monday nights.

Remember when Atari came out with a video game console? It was the coolest thing in the world to bounce a square ball back and forth.

What's scary is I can relate to most of the things in the list.

BTW Party lines are making a comeback...only now they charge more for it as a premium service. Go figure.
