If im not mistaken, thats their "Test" store. Might explain why that one is Upscale. I have noticed some nicer things in the walmarts lately. When plasma's hit the shelves I was certainly surprised.

One man's luxury vehicle is another man's off-road workhorse.

So please explain the Wal-Mart / H1 connection.

Here in Lost Angeles, "luxury" often is assosciated with flash. When Arnold first got one (back before he was Governor, when he lived in Pacific Palisades) the H1 became the "IT" vehicle and anyone who was anyone here had to have one. That, and they cost something like 105 grand qualifies it for luxury status I guess.

Hummers seem to be the most common vehicle of choice for top level managment at WM headquarters.

I guess the definition of luxary is as indivdule as upscale.

For me price does not dictate luxary. If thats the case then these farmers around here with $300K combines and other 1/4 million dollar field equipment, only to be used 3 weeks each year, are rolling in luxary.

For me luxary must be luxurious. It must be furnishing gratification of the senses.

There is a restaurant in Johnson, Arkansas called James At The Mill. It's off of 540/62/71, south of Bentonville, north of Fayetteville.

Amazing place. If you're in the area I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!!!!

Anyway, was there for a late lunch. No one in the place except a table of about 12 women. All dressed to the nines, each with a ring big enough to choke a horse. And all with Southern Accents thick enough to . . . well, they were thick.

Anyway, from what conversations we could overhear (they all talked incessantly) it seemed like they were all Wal-Mart executive wives.

Not a Hummer in the parking lot. Just a bunch of Mercedes, Cadillacs, and Chevys. (Go figure)

Maybe it's a Walmart Male Executive thing.

Could have been, or it could have been competition too. If they were dressed to the nines then it probably wasnt wal mart. They typically tend to try and blend. They are not well liked in the area. To many crazy, disgruntled, ex employee, hillbillies.

I work at Wal-Mart. The Plano store is a test store for a lot of things that will be popping up at new and remodeled Wal-Marts in the near future. They are trying to better compete with Target and the like, so they are making their stores more appealing and trendy for shoppers.
At the risk of sounding like a big nerd, I'm excited about the new Wal-Marts. And for all the bad press they get, I still enjoy my job and am proud of the company.

Nothing against anyone that works or shops at Walmart, but I don't think I would ever use the word UPSCALE in the same sentence as WALMART. It is what it is......a discount store, where most things are available, I have never been in a SUPER Walmart. I've asked that on here before. What makes a Walmart super?

I'm not ashamed to admit I shop at Wal-Mart. I like their prices. I hear a lot of people complain about the cheap junk they sell but tell me, what is the difference between a Sony television you buy at Wal-Mart and a Sony television you buy at Best Buy? I'm pretty sure Sony is Sony wherever you buy it!

Super Wal-Marts are the ones that sell groceries too.

The difference is quality, yes it's the same make and same model, has all the same features. But there is not a manufacturer that can supply the demand wal mart puts on it's suppliers. In manufacturing, when production goes up to close to peak capacity, quality goes down.

I do buy some at wally too. 3 of our TV's came from wally, a dvd player and vcr too. It's a roll of the dice anywhere, just seems to be greater odds against you at wally.

Upscale Wal-Mart ?

Isn't that a contradiction in terms?

I was finally in a Wal-Mart for the very first time a few months ago. And while I am not pleased with their business practices, I must say the store itself was impressive. It was about the size of a small city and had EVERYTHING. I must assume they are all like that. To turn it "upscale" seems to go against the essence (for lack of a better word) of their existence.

Anyone from Plano? Is there anything special about this Wal-Mart?

Guess this is my random thought for the day. Sorry Jamz, should have put it there.
Yes sir, I am from Plano, and I have visited that store twice. (SE Corner of Park Blvd & Dallas Parkway (Dallas North Tollway). It's kinda out of the way for me... Plano is 14 miles wide, and 7 miles from north to south, with nearly 260,000 people shoved into this area. Traffic is a real prostitute here, certain times of the day.

This Wal-Mart was opened about 120 days ago, and it is in the very wealthy neighborhood of Willow Bend, in Plano, TX. This is where you'll find an entire neighborhood of houses no smaller than 8,000 square feet, complete with 10 car garages, tennis courts, bowling alleys (in the house) and much much more. Deion Sanders' little mansion (11,000 sq. ft) was in this community (before he built a mega-35,000 square foot mansion in Prosper, TX). Troy Aikman lives there, Tom Cruise has a home there, as do several other local celebrities, and athletes.

Consequently, for Wal-Mart to build in this area, amid a plethora of Plano's citizens trying to block every new Wal-Mart, under the pretense of every Wal-Mart opening brings increased traffic, crime, and lowers their (home owners) property values; Wal-Mart's executives had to agree to build a new Wal-Mart, in a manner that would add value and enhance the surroundings of the community, rather than the "standard" square box. Therefore, Wally-World (as some of us locals call it) stepped up, and built a swanky building, and inside it is more akin to a Circuit City or Dillards, as compared to Wal-Mart's every where else. This Wal-Mart has the best Electronics department I've seen, this side of Best Buy/Magnolia & Circuit City. The store has berber carpet, hardwood floors, as well as what amounts to nothing less than a mini shopping center INSIDE the Wal-Mart, a full bank, and more. Not only that, but the stores are HUGE. Even though you can't take the Wal-Mart out of Wal-Mart, this Wally-World has a lot nicer stuff, better clothes, better merchandise in general, finer cashiers with plump rumps, everything.

In Plano, the one on 75 & Spring Creek is the largest. It's recently remodled, and probably at least 2 football fields wide, including the automotive and garden areas. They had a test bed called "Hyper Wal-Mart" in Arlington a few years ago, I don't know if it still exists. We rode past it, but didn't go in- I think it was a two-story building.

Wal-Mart's evolution into "Super Wal-Mart" has meant Wal-Mart has gone from not only being the #1 retailer in the US, but they are the #1 grocer in the US as well. This has put the squeeze on local grocery stores. Area anchor Albertson's recently announced closure of many of their stores here. I talked to a local ALbertson's employee, who told me they're closign every Alberston's which sits near a Super Wal-Mart. So far, three of the 5 Albertson's in Plano, have "Store Closing" balloons flying over the stores.

This Wal-Mart's opening, meant closure for what was my favorite Wal-Mart in this city (Park & Preston) only 2-3 mile from the new site. But, from my house, there are a number of Wal-Marts in Plano, within minutes of my house.

Park & Dallas Parkway (About 8 miles), Ohio & 121 (About 7 miles), Spring Creek & Coit (about 4 miles), Coit & 190 (George Bush Tollway) about 5 miles, Spring Creek & Central Expressway (About 4 miles). This is not countign the Wal-mart's nearby in cities like Richardson, North Dallas area, Carrollton, The Colony, etc...

They tried to put a Wal-Mart in on Coit & Hedgecoxe, but the residents there b*tched so much, and so feverishly, that they won, and it didn't go in there. It was funny, you could ride through at night (as I did, on my way home from school) and people had "NO WAL-MART" spelled out in Christmas tree lights, on their privacy fences.

Both Albertsons here in Boulder, where there is no Wal-mart, are also closing. I'm disappointed cause one is right down the block and I go there all the time to get drinks and snacks
