Yep, these are teh same half-@$$, coochie-whipped kids that will be joining our military (or not) 12 - 18 years from now...

If we don't toughen them up at home, they'll never get it at school.
I've started plucking my son's Adam's apple already! He's gonna be a fighter!

We used to play dodge ball with a basketball, and/or a soccerball. A couple of hits with that, and you get really quick, and you grow another 3-4 layers of skin, in case you get hit.

We played it all, freeze tag, "it", hide & seek, hide & go get it, House, doctor, touch and/or tackle football. I've shot kids with stopper guns, that had needles in the stopper, not to mention all the fist-fights from 1-7th grade. (No fights in Kindergarden, or after I whipped my friend's **** in teh 7th grade to the point that no one else tried me for the next 5 years... Except on the football field, but- those fights didn't really count, and- no matter who won, you still ost because fighting on the team was punishable by 4-5 rounds, in:

THE BULLRING

You didn't want to be in the Bull Ring. If You've played football, organized football, you know what the bull ring is.

I was always the last one on my team to last. Had the dodge part of dodge ball down, but never was good at throwin though. I don't think I've ever gotten anyone out.

That was the best. I loved it when the ball got dropped, and everybody would huddle around it, just waiting for the someone to go for it, and then if that guy didn't have some serious wheels after he grabbed it, he was pummled! That was one of my favorites.

I couldn't agree with that statement more!!!!

My wife babysits 3 kids, one of them a 12 year old boy. My kids are 6, 4, and 3, all boys. This 12 year old told his mom that he doesn't like coming over here b/c my boys beat him up too much, and we make him go play outside.... He swears that he just has to have his A/C and PC/Xbox games...

And these are the kids that are going to run the country in 20 years...

Anyone remember BB wars? Put on eye and ear protection, break out the Daisy Red Ryders, and have a blast... Who needs paintball? If you had a whelp, you had been hit...

Eye and Ear protection for BB wars... around my neighborhood you'd be considered the puss for that. We played shirts and skins team BB wars, skins always had it worst.

We always played "murder ball". It was great. Smear the queer was always a favorite, too. I'd forgotten about that.

Hey,
I was always first to volunteer for "bullring". Nothing like a running head start and ringing somebody's bell to start the practice. The good old days.

We had neighborhooh BB wars all the time. One guy did get shot close to his eye one time. He never played again. We missed him, he was a great shot and fearless. Kinda what got him messed up in the first place. Stampeding the other guys hangout. My sister kept welts from my gun all over her. She was older and beat the crap outta me every chance she got. Everytime she came outside and my gun was close, I got as many shots in as I could.

You see the documentary film "Murderball" ? About wheelchair rugby. Pretty fanatical players.

I once asked my Dad could I play dodge ball with the other kids. He kicked me in the face and sent me to Okinawa to study martial arts with the head instruments. I was eight.

No, the Bullring consists of every player on the team making a circle around you. You are in the middle.

Coach then assigns every man a number, 1 - 40 (or however many players you have).

Now, there's two ways to do this. I call it "Civilized" and "Uncivilized".

In the Civilized Bull Ring, coach might yell out. Twenty three. The Player assigned number 23 will come at you, and you must take him on, (hit him, or absorb the hit). Problem is, you can only see 25% to 50% of the team, 23 could be behind you. You have to be quick! As it goes on, he may call multiple players, by saying, "One and Six!" The Players with those numbers both come at you full-speed, and you have to take them on (hit them, or absorb the hit). The bigger and better you are, the more players he'll call to hit you. (Up to three). The only rule is, they can't spear you in the back, anything else is fair game... That's the "Civilized" bull ring...

The uncivilized bullring, much like the civilized, is composed of the same circular ring aroudn the player- however, this is much more likely to happen to a player with disciplinary problems: (ie: Breaking curfew, fighting a teammate, disrespecting a teacher, or- the poor sap that decides to "quit".) You can leave, but- it'll be with an "***-whipping" first.

So, getting back to it; the only rules the coaches had was this: "If I see any of you, taking it easy on ________ because he's your friend, you are going in the bull ring next. I want EVERYBODY, to get a piece of him! If I never see you hit him, because you're too slow, you're getting in the ring next! Now, when I blow this whistle, you'd better get him!"

Needless to say, when that whistle said "tweet" whoever was in that bullring, was about to get his bell rung, over, and over, and over, and over again... I've seen it all- Fools taking their helmet off and swinging it, trying to hit the first one he faces. I've heard it all, "Imma kick your @$$es, one by one at school tomorrow!" (which usually resulted in coach gettign ticked, and making them stay in there longer...)

My coach played pro football, and this was in the 80's. Nowadays, parents are so wussy with their kids, and everyone is lawsuit-happy, to the point that whether the child got hurt or not, if that was to happen in 2005, Coach would be out of a job, and the school sued...

To this day, I still have a great deal of respect for Coach. No one ever got hurt, but the uncivilized bull ring was not a place you wanted to be... Needless to say, there was rarely a lapse in discipline on our team, for the three years I played High School ball.

In my three years, and 34 regular season games, we went: 21-7 in the regular season, and 2 - 3 in the playoffs.

84-85: 9 -1, 1st round BYE, won 2nd round, technically-eliminated in round three (Player deemed ineligible*).
85-86: 6 - 3, Won first playoff game, eliminated in round two.
86-87: 6 - 4, Eliminated in first round.

*- At my school, the would-be star QB played ball, but failed his 9th grade year. He repeated that grade, and maintaining his grades this time, so he played that year too. He played in his 10th, 11th, and 12th grade years as well.

LSHSAA (Louisiana State High School Athletic Association) stated (after our season was over, and we were in the playoffs) that our QB was only eligible to play 4 seasons of high school football, regardless of his age (he was still 17, about to turn 18) so, as we were 2 games away from playing for the state championship, we were eliminated from the playoffs, and had to forfiet all our games that year, dropping us from 9 -1, to 0 - 10, technically.

Many of us had gone to the 1984 World's Fair in New Orleans, to return home that morning, circa 2:00 AM, to the news that we were out of the playoffs. I thought my Mom was joking, until she handed me the newspaper...

We never got that close, again. We had the best run defense in the state, allowing less than 60 yards a game, and was in the top 10 in pass defense. That year, our QB threw for 2,400 yards (All-State), or which my friend Peter, had half-of (1,200 receiving, All-State). Big Joe, as we called him, was 6'4", 298 lbs, and ran a 4.6 40-yard dash. He had 110 solo tackles, and led the state (All-State). The supporting cast was solid- but, one oversight cost us the season...

We would have had our own movie, "Remember the Tigers!"
