I got an Ant Problem!
Sounds like Carpenter Ants to me too. They can be destructive to your home so you seriously need to do something more than spray around the doors and put little traps around. If there are as many as you say there are, I would consider calling an exterminator. I have had good luck with Ortho Max. I mix it up and spray the foundation every 2-3 weeks in the summertime. Seems to help keep the buggers at bay.
Solution:
Buy 2 things, black powder and smokeless powder.
Every day for about 2 - 3 weeks go outside and sprinkle a little of the black powder on all of the anthills you know about. When you are done with this, pick a hill and pour a trail of the smokeless powder back to a very safe location and light it. Your yard will lift 3 feet into the air and smoke, dirt and ants will go flying out of holes you didn't even know about in your yard.
Why this works?
Ants will take anything small enough to carry underground into their tunnels, thus the black powder will get spread around through the entire network over the 2 - 3 weeks you are laying it.
Why I don't suggest it?
Potential for property damage, loss of life, you name it lol

You haven't by any chance left any food or garbage lying around the house or right outside your house have you? I know here at my house, there is a bad ant problem, mainly outside but they have came inside before. They are usually near food or crumbs or by garbage. And when I see them, there will be hundreds of them. But these are not the big black ones you have, these are the very small red ants that if you step in them on accident, they will be all over your legs and feet in a matter of seconds and you won't even notice them right away. Then of course I always get bit in several places. One one ankle right now I have about 8 ant bites from where I was working in the yard getting ready for the wedding. My dad has a similar problem and he will spread sevin dust around his yard.
I don't know what really works, mine are outside mainly so they don't really bother that much.

Been going through the same thing in Maine, no Ants at all then after about 2 1/2 inches of rain in 2 days BAM! not many of them mind you but a few everywhere, When the wife sees 4 or 5 in 5 rooms within 5 min...off to HD I go. picked up Orthro Home Defense MAX and ant traps to put in the corners of bathroom and laundry.
Sprayed everywhere, window sills- doors, even where she hadn't seen anything. The Orthro Max doesn't smell funky and is safe to spray along the carpet and wall without staining anything. The next day almost none left to squash. The rain had stopped, so that didn't hurt either.
Its happened probably 3 times so far this year.
Good luck to ya.
