Switched over to Sprint the other day. I was on T-Mobile (their coverage in Lost Angeles left a lot to be desired). Sprint's coverage in LA is very, very good.

I picked up the A900 (a.k.a The Blade) which is their answer to The Motorola Razor.



It has the new high speed EV-DO, so you can surf the net at close to broadband speeds, and you can even watch TV on it. (Sure, that's essentially worthless, but the WOW factor is fun) They have a few different levels of service, the higher up you go, the more channels you get. You can watch CNN, Fox news, ABC News, Cartoon Network, ESPN, and a bunch of other stuff if you are so inclined.

It's got bluetooth, internet, camera (1.3 megapixels) and a camcorder too. The movies are marginal, the camera is pretty good. I took this shot at sunset thru my windshield while at a stop light:




(As you can see, someone just got a Lamborghini Murcielago Roadster . . . lucky bastard)

The screens (inside and out) are awesome, great image and clarity, and all the bells and whistles you expect from a cutting edge cell phone, voice recognition, etc. etc. etc.

But the best thing about it . . . it's super thin and weighs nothing. A welcome change from the brick I was carrying around (SidekickII).

So if any of y'all are thinking about this phone, I give it a big thumbs up.

This one does, and after rebates it's essentially free.

Good heavens no! We all drive new cars and have to trade them in on even newer cars before the plates arrive. It's a law.

Actually, the 6 million illegal aliens in CA have them, but they're stolen.

 

I think I'm switching to sprint, I hate my contract with Cingular and my monthly rates are outrageous. Very expensive, can't even afford it but I can't afford to cancel either. What are the cheap rates with Sprint? Wonder how their norcal coverage is...I know nobody with Sprint.

 

Sprint/Nextel are one and the same now. I have had Nextel since 10/05, and during that time it has been under the ownership of Sprint. Anyway, the coverage is pretty good I suppose but I have found out that when you get the cheap phones, they have quirks about them that will **** you the hell off. I know mine have, several times. Anyway, whenever I drive up the 5 corridor, my Nextel phone works fine. I had Cingular before, and it wasn't too bad, but $55 a month for 250 anytime minutes, free nights and weekends; or 500 free anytime minutes, free nights and weekends, free incoming calls, free nationwide Direct Connect (walkie talkie), free mobile to mobile for $75 a month. I'll take the latter of the two. In fact, I did. Anyway, I say check out Nextel Josiah because then the next time you're in the middle of a fight, I can beep you and go "Run Forrest Run!" j/k man, couldn't help it

I was under the impression you did your fair share of over seas travel. I would have assumed you would have stayed with a GSM carrier.

That is a sweet phone and a great pic.

I like the Razor but what I don't like is the number pad. Very smooth and highly reflective....I can't tell but your phone looks like the buttons are slightly raised and are black.

Looks nice.

You brought up two things that gave me pause when buying this phone:

You are correct, it's not international. My SidekickII was, But in reality, I think I only used the Sidekick twice while in Europe. So I decided it wasn't that big a deal. If I absolutely have to make a call while in France I'll call from the hotel. My main concern was to switch to Sprint as their coverage in Los Angeles is pretty much the best (whereas T-Mobile was weak signal here and always dropping). I also wanted a small, thin phone . . . which brings up your second point(s)

The buttons and numbers are not raised (I just took a pic only seconds ago to show you a better angle that demonstrates this)



I thought the flat buttons were going to be a problem, but it hasn't been. YOu are correct, they are not shiny, they are black, and the numbers and letters are backlit. IF touch is your thing, you can easily find "5" and the rows are separated by a slight ridge, so you can essentially "feel" where each number is by touch if you needed to. I either am looking at the screen and select a number from my "contacts" list, or just use a voice command. If I say "Call home", it does.

While Sprint does now own Nextel, they operate using different cell towers and their signals are not the same (at least not here in LA).

Prior to T-Mobile, I was with Nextel. The walkie talkie feature was great and worked everywhere, their cell signal(here in Lost Angeles at least) was crap. And from what I hear, their cell service here has not improved.

Sprint, on the other hand, the cell service in LA is amazing. Lost Angeles is notorious for terrible cell service. The LA basin, the valley, the coast, are all seperated by hills. If you live or work anywhere in the valley or the West Side, you are always losing signal with just about any carrier. Nextel was crap, TMobile was crap, Cingular is crap, Verizion is pretty good, and at present, Sprint rocks!

Cost wise, Sprint is more expensive (Verizon is the most expensive) With TMobile I got 1000 minutes for 39.99. That costs 59.99 with Sprint (even more with Verizion, 69.99 I think)

The other down side (as was brought up in another post) is the contract. I had a one year with TMobile . . . Sprint was 2 years. But that's fine. It's a great signal, a lot of my friends are on sprint so all those calls are free and don't count against my minutes, the EVDO is blazing fast, so it all seems to be good.

This of course is LA, your signal with your carier in a different location may vary.
