Folks,
Not sure if this has been on the board before, but worth a look

do not feel too bad
That my stink as far as the 40 mph for hitting a solid wall or something that will not move. What they do not show you is the mini cooper vs. the F-150 on a head on. That mini would be annihilated!

"the F150 on the other hand had "Major collapse of the occupant compartment that left little survival space for the driver." I'm interested in how a company could create a modern vehicle that could perform so badly on this test. Furthermore Ford had lots of space to work with to make this a safe vehicle.
Keep in mind also this is the best selling vehicle in the US. One would think that Ford, knowing this, would have put more effort into the engineering of this truck. It gets worse; this platform is also the basis of both the Ford Expedition and to some extent the Ford Excursion. Both are marketed to be tough, safe, go anywhere SUVs and are sold as family transportation.
Why haven't we seen Dateline covering this. Why are they more interested in 5mph bumper tests - shouldn't this be front page news somewhere? There are millions F150s out there."
Regardless of what they are saying, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety doesn't lie, the previous generation F-150 failed a 40 MPH crash test, the pics clearly show no room for the survival of occupants, go to their site and compare the previous generation F-150 to todays, a world of difference. I'd never put my kids in that previous truck...

Really? Do you think we wanted to get rid of our '99 F-150? No, we didn't. When it comes to the safety of my family, nothing, not even a truck will come first. You need to check the facts...IIHS does not lie. I'm not saying that it's a definite death trap, i'm saying based on the results of that test it is not worth the potential risk to my family. It only takes one bad accident to make a lifetime of regret.

J.D. Power & Associates and the N.H.T.S.A. both agreed. Consumer Reports rated it marginal for non seatbelt integrated seats and poor for seats with the belts built in. As did multiple News shows that I saw it on repeatedly when that story first broke.
Both said that the F-150 was an average rated crash vehicle except at the off-axis collision were it performed Poorly.

Yeah, you would think a company that has Volvo Engineers at it's disposal, would be buildign the safest vehicles on the road.
But, with the F-series beign Fords best selling brand, it would not surprise me if the beancounters were trying to build it as cheaply as possible in order to maximize profits across the board.
It wouldn't surprise me if the Focus was pound for pound, a better built vehicle...
I had two of the previous Gen F-150's, and they both rated high in head on impacts, but few cars (back then) performed well in the 40 MPH offset. That wasn't (And I don't think it is now) an industry design standard back then. That's somethign Consumer Reports started doing, if memory serves. Plus, 40 MPH is pretty darn fast to come into contact with an opposite moving or stationary object.
You hit a car from any angle at that sped and a significant injury is likely.
If you want to impress me, build a car/truck that can survive the 40 MPH Side impact, without killing the driver. I had a freind get killed just like that...
Damn shame that a (bigger/taller) truck couldn't take a hit from a car like that, and protect the driver. Woman ran the red light as he was crossing, <BAM>. He died 4 days later from his injuries.
