I've Discovered He11 On Earth -- It's Newark!
In the line of work I do, I have the opportunity to visit many different parts of this country. Some areas stick out in my mind as prime examples of urban decay -- New Orleans, Louisiana, for example, or even my current "home city" of Houston, Texas.
But nothing has even come close to what I have seen here today in Northern New Jersey! I am absolutely dumfounded by the level of urban squalor that exists around here! Every bridge looks as if it is a hundred years old and ready to topple over! Every road is pot-holed and decrepit and lined with characterless concrete barriers that give it the look of a perpetual construction zone! Every building and street sign seems to be covered with spray painted grafitti of some sort or another! Get off the beaten path and you can't help but be left with the sense that there are just too many people crammed into too small of a space and the whole thing is about ready to slide off into the ocean!
I could hardly wait to get back to my hotel room tonight to shower off all the grunge and just curl up under the covers to escape the insanity that surrounds me in this god-awful location!

I just asked you in another thread where in Jersey you were. You are in the absolutely worst place Jersey has to offer. I feel sorry for you DD. Take a ride south if you get any time. Or even further north. Things will be alot different. How long are you here till?
LT:
I'm staying right across the highway from the Newark airport through tomorrow night. So far today I have been about 10 miles north and south of here on Hwy 1 & 9, and about 10 miles west of here on Hwy 22.
Tomorrow I'm traveling up to a town called Wallkill (?) NY -- I think that's the name of it?
Hey, if you're familiar with the area, where can I get some good local pizza? I went down to the front desk at the hotel and was blown away when they recommended Dominos! My god -- I'd expect this in Des Moines, but not up in this part of the country!
Any tips?
DD

Get the hell out of Newark....drive an hour south and youll be fine. Its unfortunate what an armpit that city is. I hate going there. I havent been to Wallkill in a long time. Not sure its gonna be much better. Like LT said, try to make some time and get down here to the shore..your only like 1.5 hours from me.

10 miles North or South isn't really far enough to see the nicer parts of Jersey.
As for pizza, the best pizza I have ever had is Sciortino's. They used to be located in Perth Amboy, which is also a hell hole, but they moved to South Amboy. Everything is homemade. Thin crust and best sauce you would ever taste. Am I making you hungry!!! South Amboy is probably about 20-30 minutes tops. Less time if you take the dreaded Turnpike.
PS...You should have told me you were coming. I would have taken you sightseeing.

Sightseeing, he11 -- I'd be enrolling you as my chaffeur! I'm having this recurring panic attack whereby I make one wrong move on the highway and end up hopelessly stuck in hours of traffic down in one of the tunnels!

You would take the Turnpike South to Exit 11. That will bring you onto Route 1 & 9 again, but further south. Take Route 9 South into South Amboy. It's located on Broadway in South Amboy. Best thing to do is mapquest it. I would hate to give you a wrong turn. The address is:
Sciortino's At Harbor Lights
132 South Broadway
South Amboy, NJ 08879
Phone-732-721-8788 (in case you get lost)
(searched the address for you)
South Amboy is also a very small old town, but alot nicer than where you are. And also, South Amboy is in The Guiness Book of World Records for most bars in 1 sqaure mile.
You'll love the pizza. Trust me on that.

But if for some reason I can't make it, let me know what you think. Geez, I hope you like it as much as I do. BTW...it used to be a tiny Mon & Pop place, but it got so popular that they had to move. Full restaurant now.
