Wits End

My job sucks; I can't take it anymore. I've been looking for another IT job for a couple months now with no luck. I'm half tempted to get a general office job somewhere and take the business route. Unfortunately; I'm not the business leader of tomorrow so it wouldn't take me anywhere. If I want to get the cash; I should stay in IT. This sucks; I dont know how much longer I can take this company and this job that forces me to surf the forums 8hrs a day.

UC, What can you do, or what do you know? There are many different IT jobs but we tend to stick with what we know and not venture very far. Besides it's not all bad getting paid to surf the net, is it?

Are there any IT guys who actually like their job? It seems as if the dissatisfaction rate is extremely high in this field -- I guess the stereotype of the "IT Geek" who would work 24/7 on computers even if you weren't paying him is a bit misleading?

Incidentally, my best friend is a lawyer, and it seems to me that all lawyers hate their jobs as well! I guess I am really lucky to have the kind of job that I actually look forward to most mornings (?). I can honestly say that if I won the lottery, I'd still want to keep my job, although I might try to cut it back to 3 days per week.....

I'm your basic run of the mill systems administrator. I know basic networking; computer repair; troubleshooting; typical server administration; blah blah. Sure I can learn most anything with ease but that doesn't help whe looking for a job. Most the skills I need to acquire aren't the type of thing you can learn in your home...you need expensive software and equipment.

Yes; surfing the forums 8hrs a day is very bad when you do it month after month and work for a company which is literally owned and operated by the devil.

My job is about as boring as it gets. Which is why I have this much free time to stay on here. However, I'm not going anywhere because they pay for half my schooling and I can do my homework here. Now in 2 years....C ya but I'm looking for IT management not IT work.

The geekiness of the job doesn't interest me. I could care less about P4 3bazillion gigahertz... Tying IT systems with the business and making the business work more efficiently is what I like.

High-Five. That's what I use to say but alas; I doubt it will ever happen.

Actually, not a bad suggestion! I considered this myself when I was "lost" my first few years out of college. I wanted to go in for Air Traffic Control, but they told me I couldn't get into the program because of my lousy vision.

I think there is an aspect of the military lifestyle that's quite attractive, and as long as you're young and single it'd a heck of an adventure!

They told you wrong. Your eyesight must be corrected to 20/20 vision. I learned ATC in the Air Force. It paid off in dividends. I now earn 6 figures. I wear glasses now and when I was in the USAF many Controllers wore glasses. Probably half the controller work force wears glasses.

The USAF was by far the best job I had. I had tons of fun and met great people. I don't know why people are afraid of the military except for the ground war in Iraq. You are paid well, fed well and are given a place to stay or they pay you to stay off base. I had my oldest son talked into going but he backed out at the last minute. He didn't have 20/20 vision and he was gonna be a controller. The Navy has controllers also. On carriers and also on land.

You can get a great education in the military. They have guaranteed job programs.

PS. Your first stop in the USAF would be San Antonio. If you were to be a Controller you would then go to Biloxi, MS for ATC school.

Yea well this last part kinda ticks me off. I've got more qualifications than have these kids getting out of the military but I cant touch the jobs cause they are lined up for these kids.

Getting the education is great but holding these jobs for ex-military bugs me.

One thing to watch out for when heading down here to SA is to try not to be down here for basic during the summer as much as possible. Every year during summer there is usually one or two in basic that die because of the heat during their training.

Just out of curiosity, when was this? I would have spoken to them in the late-80's -- is it possible requirements changed? Seriously, if they had told me I could get into the ATC program, I'd have been gone, since I was really disenchanted with the business world at the time! Kind of makes me mad thinking about it now!

Hey, I feel the same about my job. I love it here, but I think I could handle Tuesday thru Thursday just fine.

Sorry to hear you're unhappy with your job UC, it generally makes the job a whole lot more difficult to stay with when you are unhappy with co-workers/bosses/work environment or just the work itself. I hope something better comes along soon.
