Powder coatings ??
Hey guys, anyone have experiance with powder coatings. I saw another thread where "casey" had some wheels powdercoated.

I called a local shop who advised "we do wheels all the time"
I asked if heating the wheels weaken the aluminum the guy advised that they bake the wheels at 400 degrees for 15 minutes. price is $60 a wheel gloss black
I would think that the structural integrity of the aluminum would be compromised at that temp. changing the temper of the metal. anyone have any input? I would sure hate to strap a set of soft aluminum wheels to my 6000lb truck

Dean...
I've had mine on for over a year now and have done some towing and off roading and haven't had any problems... 60 bucks a wheel sounds high to me though.. I had mine done for 30 bucks a wheel and that included bead blasting them... just make sure if you have it done that they clean the inside of the hole that the hub fits into... they didn't on mine and the powdercoating essentially sealed my wheels onto the hub.. took two sledgehammers and a lot of pounding to get the wheels off... just make sure they clean that part off before it goes into the oven.. if not you'll have to take a dremel or something to knock the powdercoating down..

I'm also getting ready to get some wheels powdercoated. I think i'm going to get mine in a dark grey to kinda match the bottom of my truck. After seeing casys wheels I just have to get it done. Looks awesome
.
does anyone know the advantages of powdercoating over Just getting them painted?

Powdercoating is about a bazillion times tougher than paint... it's thick, it will not chip.. it will scratch however... but not easily... and its permanently bonded to the wheels... I use the turtlewax spray shine stuff that I use on my paint on my wheels and they look as good as the day that I had them done... plus you can get just about any color you could imagine.. even metal flake... imho the only thing tougher than powdercoating is chrome plated... I've had them in the mud, rocks, pasture and on two cross countries and have smeared mucho brake dust on them and they still shine up... i couldn't be happier honestly... by the way, you can do any wheel that way and it looks like a one-off.. the ones on my truck are 04 expedition rims... but no one ever realizes that until I tell them...
