Calling all Texans....

Hey folks,

Now, I know we aren't all gardeners, but I have a question to ask you guys.

Do you think winter is over, or do you think we will have one more frost? The reason I am asking is, we are going to have a beautiful weekend this weekend, and I was thinking of getting the garden tilled up and ready to plant.

What do ya'll think? Wait till the second week in April, or go ahead and get started. I don't want to put out my tomato plants and a frost kill em all. That would suck.

Thought?

Well here in Jersey, The Garden State, a late frost doesn't hurt our tilled soil.

Go ahead and garden up a storm! In north Texas we're expecting mid to upper 70's all week with mild nights and occasional chances of showers. Gotta love living in the South!!!

I would be tempted, but its Texas...the weather can change in the span of 10 minutes. Hell, 2 weeks ago we were out back, nice night, had shorts on and all that. Out of nowhere it gets cold and starts raining.

So I wouldnt get ahead of yourself and say winter is over for us just yet, a cold front can come through any time.

Here in Iowa the rule of thumb is no tomatoes in the ground until Mothers day no matter how great the weather, we had a ton of customers jump the gun last year, three heavy frosts came in April.

You can get everything tilled up and ready but I'd hold off until the first week of April or longer before I'd even consider putting tomatoes in the ground. Probably wouldn't hurt to toss a little lime in when you till if you didn't last year, and I assume you worked in some manure last fall.
