I stopped by Wally World on my way home tonight. They didn't have the Syslink router in stock. They had one Belkin Wireless G Plus left on the shelf so I bought it, and one wireless PCI card to go in one of the desktops. I am going to give it a shot tomorrow night when I get howe to see if I can make it work.

Wish me luck. I have never done anything like this before.

Just to make sure about this, is this the way I want to hook all this up?

Where the hub/switch is in the photo, will this be my wireless router, and after the router all other PC's will be connected wireless?

In your setup, the PC connected to the dial-up will be the "proxy server" (via Windows ICS). Each computer will be connected to each other through the router.

If you go to the Help and Support center in XP, type in ICS and it should give you some helpful hints and some articles that will explain things nicely.

Yours will be like this...

Except your clients will connect to the hub (AKA router) via wireless.

Step by step with screen shots can be found here

OK I got everything working except one of the laptops. One of the laptops just started working on its own, but I can't get the second one to do anything on the web, or email. It is showing a strong connection to the wireless network in the house but that is as far as it goes.

Keep in mind that these two laptops are identicle and boutght on the same day. I even tried rebooting the one that isn't working (MINE ) with no changes. Any ideas?

Can you see the other lap top and the desk top in "My Network Places"?

It says the network connection is not available even though the icon down in the tray is telling me that I am connected. It then goes on to say "you might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission.

I'm lost

Sorry that was not what I thought it was.

try here, find your router, then find the set up wizard for it.

I tried that a couple of times and every time it get to the point that I could use the info the stupid site locks up. As much as I hate to do it, I may have to end up calling my brother-in-law tomorrow night. He is a sys admin and knows his **** but he is the type that never lets you forget it.

I just don't get why one laptop will work fine but the other one won't.

Sorry I fel asleep last night.

You have ran thru the windows XP wireless network wizard on each of the laptops?
Then share atleast one folder on each computer

That sounds more like there is an IP conflict. Probably with either the ISP or the Dial up modem.

If your brother-in-law is coming out wait for him and have him show you the settings.

But if not then try this

See if you can access the router from the desktop computer that is hard wired to the router.
Open a browser and type 192.168.2.1 in the address bar.
It will take you to the routers home page
Click on LAN settings on the left
It will ask you to log in
Leave blank and hit ok
You are now at the LAN settings
Change the IP to 192.168.1.1
Hit ok, or apply, or what ever it has.
Shut down all computers and the router
Restart the router and wait for it to boot
Then start the host computer and wait for it to completely boot

pt 2
Open browser and type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar (this is the new IP for the router)
Back at the routers home page
Click on Class and SSID under the wireless on the left
leave log in blank hit ok
in calss SSID everything should be at default and blank
Click on encryption
use disabled or non or what ever turns it off
restart router
Restart host
Then start each laptop one at a time.

Once everything is working, even if Brother in law gets it then do this yourself
Open browser on host computer (IE desktop)
Open the router again, 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1 if you did not change it.
click on save/backup settings on the right
leave log in blank
then save your routers settings somewhere on your computer (ie in My Documents) so you can restore them from that file later if you need to.

Thanks for all the help!!!! It is up and running with 4 computers, and it is actually pretty fast with two people surfing right now. Only thing left to do is get one more wireless card for the old beater running WIN 2000 Pro.

It turned out to be an IP address conflict between the host and router.

Glad to here it....

Those instructions would have fixed it but an easier way would have been on the host to enable "optain IP automaticly". The the router would have gave it its own and could not have conflicted with it's self.
Strange for a nit card to have that IP as default.... Ussually a nit cards default is 192.168.1.1. Which I never thought to have you check to see if it was set to obtain IP automatially or not.

Now you see why I hated working help desk, was not very good at it and would never do it again. If I'm there then I remember to check things like that, but if I'm not then I can't seem to remember for some reason.
