Joey Porter Day!!!
I can't believe my local govt. is glorifying this a$$hole. I currently live in Bakersfield, CA and coincidentally that is where Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Joey Porter is from. Now bear with me for a moment while I vent. Our beloved mayor has made February 18th Joey Porter Day in my city which too many might seem like a mayor honoring one of it's fine upstanding citizens who has just won the Super Bowl. Well the only problem with that is that Joey Porter is a documented member of the East Side Crips street gang here in Bakersfield. Remember a couple of years ago when Joey Porter was shot in the a$$ outside of a Denver nightclub, GANG RELATED... It just angers me that my city govt. does nothing to try to stem the outrageous gang violence we have here and glorifies the idiots who are a part of it.
I'm a local police officer here and many times during the offseason Joey Porter while back here visiting would rent out a local bar in the downtown area where all the other bars are and designate it his hip-hop nite. Well one nite this past summer about 300 of Joey Porters "assosciates" were outside of this bar causing a rucous while I and a few other officers were on foot patrol in the area. Not 10 minutes later a group of rival gang members walked up and sprayed about 100 bullets into the crowd and ran off, killing two people and injuring 8 others. 10 minutes later a local hang out of Joey's enemies was hit with a similair burst of gunfire killing two more and injuring 3.
My point to this whole post is that I know Joey Porter isn't the only gangster in professional sports I mean alot of these guys are look at the way they act on camera or in games it's absolutely ridiculous. I just find it abhorring when they are glorified to this extent and the local govt. didn't even bother to see what kind of guy they were honoring. What's next a carnival in honor of Charles Manson!

He is a thug. I understand that it is very hard to get anyone to testify in gang related crimes, so there are far more crimes than convictions for things like shooting into crowds and killing people.
Tough situation for the city council, though, becuase if they don't honor a returning superbowl hero, then they will be accused of being racists.
Of course I did not attend, but from what I saw on the local news, it did not look like a very large turnout.
