Hey Geocachers!!!

I laid my hands on the OCB (Original Can of Beans) this weekend... For those that don't know, it's the very first trade item from the very first Geocache EVER!!!

Here's a pic...

For those that don't care...

I've used both Garmin Etrex Legend and Magellan SportTrak Map, and like them both... Ease of use for both was excellent, but the button configuration on the Magellan was nicer and better laid out... If I had the money now, I'd buy the Magellan Meridian Gold. It's got all kinds of goodies on it.

If you get into it after you start, you'll want to download GSAK or something similar... It's a database that you can keep track of all of the Geocaches in your area. Pay for it, though... The free version lasts forever, but gives you a "Nag Screen" that stays up longer and longer for EVERYTHING you do the longer you use the freebie version. It's a really nice program and cheap, too.

You'll want a piece of mapping software that's compatible with whichever GPS you decide to buy... (It sucks to look at a blank map and have to figure out what roads to take to get to the cache!!!)

Geocaching is addictive, especially if you have kids... My 4 year old and 11 year old LOVE it!!! It's become a family hobby.

I'd like to get involved, but I have no idea where to begin. I think I have the basic idea, but I still need to do a little more research.

You could always start with the local association

I set up an acct at www.geocaching.com I will figure it out eventually.

Now, I need to get a GPS and get the ball rolling. I checked out people in my area doing this, and there are tons of places to search.

Yeah, buy a GPS and get the lat & long for your home. Then, go edit your profile and put those coords in the appropriate field and then the default display in "Search for nearest caches from your home coordinates" will display ALL Geocaches within a 100 mile radius of that point. It sounds like you'll have A LOT!!! Have fun, it's addictive!!!

Steve must be working on the site again...seems a little slow right now.

ANYWAY.

Yeah, all the places that is listed in Athens, I know exactly where those are.

When one finds a "treasure," what kind of things can we expect to find?

That's the thing that is on my mind.

Dunno, haven't really looked at it... I do know that they're pricey. Maybe overkill for Geocaching, but that's my $.02

I have a backpack filled with a bunch of trinkets, little toys, penlights, Hot Wheels, stuff like that to trade. Usually FTF (First To Find) gifts are nicer. I've seen custom engraved LED flashlights and cool stuff like that...

The general rule is, "Trade Equal, Trade Up..."

Cool!

I've read a little about the OCB... I have actually been working on a series of caches for placement early this spring... (just what I need -- more caches to maintain... LMAO).
