Varmit Gun
I tend to agree with Inbred, really depends on what you want to hunt and the enviroment you will be in. I'm not really sold on the .17, to light of round for open areas but may work fine in heavy cover at short range. Make and caliber of weapon is only the first step, size and type of ammo is probably just as or more important in some cases.
I spend allot of time calling coyotes and bobcat. If I am hunting river bottoms or canyons, I carry my Bushmaster Varminator, 223 cal. with a 55 grain bonded hollowpoint, consistant out to 300 yards. AR15 style, light weight and easy to carry in rough areas. When I'm out in the hills and open field country where it may call for a 300 plus yard shot, I have a Ruger M77 243 cal, fluted bull barrel shooting 60 grain bonded hollowpoints.
Talk to your local gun shops, bottom line you will usually end up buying whatever you can get the best deal on and make it work for you.

You want to go through a brick of .22 ammo REAL fast? Take two 50 round clips, hold the gun at your left hip (if you're a righty) stick your right finger in the trigger loop and rattle it back and forth as fast as you can. Flip clip, repeat
Thanks to everyone that replied. I am more or less just looking for a Mid range rifle, doubt I will be shooting any praire dogs, but woodchucks are a definate, also any coyotes/fox I see (making a mess of the pheasants in the area), coons too. I also like going to the range and having a good solid shooter. So really I would like to get a good bench gun.
I have a .22 remington for small stuff, squirrels an such. I use a 20 Ga Ultra Slug, or a .50 Cal CVA for Deer.

Basically same princiable only spring action for full auto feel. Trigger is still pulled between each shot so it is 100% legal as long as semi autos are.
Be for warned: An SKS with 2, 100 rnd drums ran thru as fast as you can with this.... yea it will melt the barrel out.
As far as a good varmint gun you cant go wrong with a 22-250, 220 swift, 223, 204 ruger,243,243,221 frieball, 218 bee, or a 257.. I wouild also look at the new winchest super short magnums in the 25 WSSM,243 WSSM or the 223 WSSM.
I've a ruger 10/22 with 4 25 rd. clips and one 50 rd. clip. You can go through ammo like a fat kid eating cake. I usually shoot CCI stingers because they are more like a 22 mag. bullet and they are awesome. They get kind of expensive when they are $4 a box and you can shoot a box in less than 30 secs. I'm thinking aobut getting a new stock and a bull barrel pretty soon but they cost quite a bit.

What did that setup cost you if you dont mind me asking?

2 yotes I shot with it a while back. It's a Winchester M70 Stealth II in 223 WSSM. So far, it does the trick.

Hell whats wrong with going with a muzzleloader?? Its pretty accurate tho. Use it for deer. The only problem i have with it is the heat/cold problem. The one day i chased down a big buck on foot for about 2 miles of tracking and when i took a shot nothing happened. It was in the back end of the truck for most of the day and about 3 hours it was put up in the cab when i had my shotgun. The powder got wet and thats all she wrote....Nothing will irk u more than that.
I want a .223 or a 22-250. Have a .243 now but expensive rounds.
Savage muzzleloader...shoots regular gun powder. (50 caliber)

I suggest a NEF handi rifle chambered in .223. I have one in .243 and it is a wonderfully acurate little rifle. http://www.hr1871.com/index.htm
