My computer crashed!!!!

Tried to upgrade my virus protection. Simple task right? WRONG!! Something happened in installation that caused my computer to crash. Don't know how I am even able to be here right now. Lost everything else!!! My email, my downloaded music ,my messengers!!! Wish me luck!!!

If Dell has you reformat the drive, it's all gone.

If it was mine, I'd run out to Circuit City or Best Buy, buy, and install an new hard drive and do a clean install on there. Once the OS is up and running, plug the 'old' drive in as a slave drive (be sure to re-set the jumper appropriately) and pull all the data off it. You can import all your e-mails, photos, music, etc from the old drive before reformatting it, plus you have a back-up drive to archive all your stuff onto now.

But if it's a Dell and still under warranty, and you actually WANT them to help you, you're probably going to lose it all.....

-Joe

edit: Just another thought: Maybe it's not the OS that crashed? Do you get a POST beep or the windows screen when it boots-up?? Will it boot in safe-mode?

-Joe

1st problem: Dell Support
2nd problem: reinstalling drivers dont indicate a problem where you data is gone.

I feel your pain. Mine has crashed 3 times. I've had to delete all my drives and create a new one while on the phone with Dell for 6 hours one night. Half the time I was asking him what he had said because you just can't understand them people

If dell tells you to format....just hang up on them....that is unless you dont care about your information. Formatting is the easy way out.

Thanks guys. I am so computer illerate when it comes to this stuff. Not sure what to do now. I hate the fact of losing all my stuff. I have unread emails in my inbox.

Joe-We tried safe mode last night and the same thing happens. Can't get anything expect internet. A beep did happen. I would do what you suggest if I knew what I was doing.

Vader-I know. Dell support does suck at times. Would I be better off calling in Geek Squad?

I agree. I have been through it myself. no sense in loosing all your info. If you just reformat you have not learned what was wrong and it will most likely happen again
