28 Years Ago Today
28 Yrs ago...wow
for those of you in the northeast that still remember the blizzard of '78 ...it started today
i remember it like it was yesterday..
driving snow ..heavy wet stuff that was drivin by hurricane winds at times..
three straight days this went on..
it totaled about 40 inches where i was..
but some places had 1 foot while 10 feet away there was a 10 foot drift..
we actually had to shovel the snow into our hallway just to get out of the back door
front door?
granted now a dazzzze snow removal has vastly improved..
but back then when you had 6 or 7 trucks for a whole town
well that just did'nt cut it
the street i lived on was not cleared for 2 weeks
i drove auto and truck parts for where my dad worked and we were real busy with all the mechanical carnage that was going on out there...
you needed a "pass" to drive on what little roads that were open
i had one and was designated beer getter for the duration
i got picked up by snowmobile and dropped off everyday by the parts store
but while i was out on what little there were to drive on i got the beer!
put it on a sled and towed it back with the snowmobile
anyone else here remember the blizzard of '78?
...zap!

i was a little too young to remember that one.
the 93 blizzard was bad and the 96 storm was very bad leaving us 38" of snow. you couldn't see the cars only faint bumps. when the city was plowed the took they snow out on trains and took them south.
We could use a good snowfall this season.

Remember it? Hell I spent January and Febuary at Fort Drum, NY just outside of Watertown. We set up and manned an air traffic control facility so the Marines and Army could play war games in Arctic conditions. We ate K Rations and used porta-potties. It stayed well below zero. 15 foot snow drifts. 40 mile an hour winds. Every C130 that came in had us on edge wondering if they were gonna make it. Our radar unit was so snowed in we had to wait until May to go back and get it. One thing I'll never forget. It was around 25 below and blowin and snowin and the Marines were on the flightline marching in tshirts that said "killem and eatem".
I never saw dirts the entire 2 months there. The snow was so deep they had to truck it away to the St Lawrence River and dump it. There was no more room to push it out of the streets.

I can't remember what year it was for sure cause I was pretty young yet but we had an ice storm in the early to mid 70's that shut down the whole area for days. You could see the damage left behind for years after that one. I remember a neighbor having a huge Oak Tree coming over right on top of there house. We didn't have any power for days and had to live in the kitchen with blankets over the door. Our only heat source was luckily a gas stove. After it was over we were the only ones in the neighborhood who had water because dad was smart enough to turn off the water to the house and drain the pipes before they froze.
This storm is one of the main reasons I will not live without a 4X4 today.

I was almost 13 years old. It was a amazing! I made alot of money shoveling snow. I hated doing our house, it was on the corner and the plows kept plowing our driveway shut
I didn't get paid for it either! But if i went down to the neighborhood bar, the old timers bought me chips & pop & cash to shovel them a path to their car

Yep, here on the Cape, just 90 miles away (South) we got...N O T H I N . Kept hearing how bad it was toward Boston, saw it in the News, but it was sunny and beautiful here on Ole Cape Cod.
I remember it well. I was 11 and my older brother had a Dodge Power Wagon extended cap 4X4. School was closed and he drove me all over. He would go to parking lots and ram the piles of freshly plowed snow. He was ok until he hit one that had melted and refroze and caved in the grill. I remember going to his camp which had a drive way that dropped down off the main road, it was really steep. The snow plows had plowed it shut so he backed up and just let it rip. We jumped the top of the driveway and our tracks started about 10 or 15 feet from the top. I don't remember how we got back out, but I am pretty sure it didn't involve shoveling! Those are some of the best memories I have of my brother since he has been gone for nearly 14 years now
