My first radio was a 15 watt AM/FM cassette player that had seperate bass & treble controls. It also had an 8-track player in the side of it. Then, in my 9th grade year, I asked for an upgrade. I got a HUGE boom box from Wal-Mart. That thing must've had 8" or 10" subs on it. Bass was crazy... It had the needles on it rather than the LED indicators. My Mom let me open it on Dec 18, since I knew I had it anyway... It broke the same night. The Cassette got stuck, and wouldn't eject. We took it back that next day, and Wal-Mart couldn't get it out, so they gave us $210.00 store credit. That's when I went and got my baby...
A Goldstar, 10 D-Cell Battery powered, single cassette with detachable speakers, ASAP (Automatic Search and Play) and audio inputs (You could play a VCR through it, and have stereo sound on your TV shows.). The year was 1984...
Believe it or not, that radio STILL plays to this day...
My Mom started playing it after I graduated. It plays around the clock, 24 x 7...
That's what a combination of being well-built, and personally takign care of something, will lead to...
A 22 year old radio, that sounds just as good as it did, 22 years ago.
I still have the first real stereo I bought when I got to Germany in 1988... My (Sansui) receiver burned out on me in 1993, but, other than that, I still have my same ADC SS-115X equalizer, the same Pioneer Expander, the same Kenwood Timer & Cassette, and the same 140 pounds-a-piece Pioneer 12" speakers...
It was put-together; purchased piece by piece, as best my $150.00 / pay period E-2 paycheck could do. But, it has traveled many miles, rocked many GI Parties, many house parties, and many a "party"
over the last 18 years...Damn; I'm getting old...
I still have a SoundSign turn table, cassette, am/fm, stereo with the original full range speakers that I got for christmas when I was 7 years old. It's in the attic and still worked when I pluged it up 2 years ago. RCA Audio in and out. With an amped sub that thing would have rocked. That's when manufacurers took pride in thier products. A cheap 25 year old stereo that still plays. HUH I've been thru 5 mid to high priced cd players in the last 10 years.
Although I still have a Pioneer Super Tuner II that still works great! Actually still using it in the F150. I have moved it from vehicle to vehicle for the last 10+ years. I'm going to run it as long as I can just to see how long it will last. Kind of want it to blow, I am running mp3's from my thumb drive or Ipod thru an FM modulator now. I want something with a built in hard drive that I can load my entire library on.
