I got me a 51" Sony rear-projection CRT back in August, and I like it. Sometimes I wish I had gotten one with a little less depth, but it works just fine. It came HD-ready (didnt have to buy an extra box), and that HDTV stuff is unbelievable. I find it hard to watch normal channels after flipping through the 30 or so HD channels I have

That particular purchase, has not exactly been a boon to being productive at home

One guy I used to work with dropped a rather ridiculous amount of cash on an HD projector, and set up a room in his house completely dedicated to fostering *** grooves. I believe he had a 7 or 8 foot screen and an outrageous sound system to boot and it was unbelieveable to look at/feel/watch your ears bleed.

When I went TV shopping I wasn't terribly impressed by the plasma screens. I found that the DLP/CRT projection screens had a "crisper" image. The DLP screens tend to be about half as thin as a CRT screen BTW.

Good luck in your TV quest...

We've got a Sony 50 or 55" HDTV and I love it. Its one of the nicest tvs you can buy, IMO. I really don't think plasma is all its crack'd up to be unless you need a bad&$^ tv just to watch movies on.

LCD

I bought the Samsung LE40M61 European EISA 2005 Winner.
40" HDTV Ready

Great specs and the image quality really stood out compared to other TV's in the same price range.
I really don't like projection TV's, the quality is so much worse and all screens I have seen were rather dark, not really bright.

I bought it for €2700 at an internetshop, going price in the regular stores is €3000-3400. ($ x1.20)

I have a Samsung 61 inch DLP - Awesome TV - keep in mind with the DLPs, the lamp is rated for around 5000 hours (roughly 2 years - average) the cost of the replacement lamp is between $200-$350 Just something to keep in mind.

Regular cable looks bad on it, but most of the networks broadcast the primetime lineup in HD now - many of the games are in HD - DVDs look great, and Xbox looks amazing.

THis is a great thread...I'm this close (fingers really close) to buying two flat screens, one smaller one for the bedroom and a nicer one for the family room.

I'm looking at a HD ready unit...which I assume works HD out of the box providing I have a HD cable box. It just cant receive over the air HD correct?

There is a bunch of stuff I'm going through before deciding what I'm going to get. One of which is burn in. My kid plays video games and dont want burn in to be an issue....

OK. Here is my .02. I just bought a 42" Maxent 42x3 plasma and a Maxent 26x3 LCD. Both are HD ready, no tuner card, need HD from satellite or cable. The 42" plasma is hanging on my LR wall, I installed it myself, and will knock your socks off with a DVD or HD signal from satellite. Non HD signal from satellite is ok, but can get channel logo's and some shows come out digitized, not bad, but not great either. The LCD is in my bedroom and it gets a great picture no matter what signal, kind of like watching a video or TV on a big laptop. Picture on the LCD is not as 3D as plasma but still is nice. Plasma are now ratied upto 50,000 hours. Burn in is an issue in the first 200 hours, but all plasmas have a setting that will allow the pixels to move as to not allow burn in.

How do ya'll justify spending that much on a TV? Are you just loaded or do you have another reason to convince yourself that $5k on a TV is okay?

mine cost a total of just over 8K for everything. I got a deal where you pay nothing for the first 18 Months, then from there you make your payments as same as cash.

I cant and wont pay 5k for a TV....they are down to about 1500-2000 and I can come to terms with that....by the time I quit procrastinating they'll be 1k.

You sure about that? Most of them deals are same as cash if paid in 18 months and the interest accrues. If the balance is paid by the 18th month you get all the accrued interest put on the account.

yes, I didn't go to no Best Buy or curcit City or anythign for a T.V since there warrenties they give out are crap, and the guys that work there don't know much about them. I went to a local shop where we have been buying T.V's now all a long. the 18 months gives you time to save up for the T.V, then you can pay it in full if you want too with out being charged more after 18 months. The T.V itself cost just over 5K, but I got the suround sound from Bose, 6 disk DVD player, recevier and of course I brought an extra Bulb in case the one I have ever burns out. Add's up to over 8K with tax

Talking

Exactly I would ot justify paying 5k for a tv. My 42" plasma was 1799 at costco. My LCD was 799. Same cost as a DLP 45-55" and they are both hanging on my walls saving me space and furniture. A 2 for 1 deal.
