I agree that the news is a drag, I hate all the ugly/unhappy stuff they are always reporting. I saw an ad once for a web site that only posts happy news stories but I can't remember the name of the site. I'd like to find it, there isn't enough heartwarming stories on the evening news these days.
It's not even just wanting the heart warming stories.
I just dont care if a women got arrested in canada for having 300 cats in her 12'x6' mobile home. Why does that concern me at all?
I definatly do not want the local news sugar coated, but a little less of the bad stuff please. I know it's bad out there I live it. Give me somthing else that I don't see every day maybe a heartwarming story in thier occasinally. But guess it's not as much fun to dig for those and it makes them have to work. People doing something good, do it just to be good, not for publicity. So those people dont call them to let them know what they are doing or did. If it doesnt come across the police scanner, they dont know about it.

The heartwarming, happy news is not what they feel the American public want. They report what 90% of the people want to see. . .blood, guts and violence. . .it sells and, sadly, the almighty $$$ is what it's all about.

After he bumped me I pulled over expecting him to too so we could exchange words. But he didn't he drove on. I chased him down and got his plates, then went back to town and notified the state police of the incident. (leaving out the part where I down shifted of course) Instead a deer ran out, I had to tap my brakes to keep from hitting it then he rear ended me.
Before they even started the report we went out to look at the damage.
It barely put a scratch in my bumper, not a big deal... just the princable of the fact.

But this is what they told me,
"Even if it was a brand new vehicle that did not have any scratches, they could not prove that he did it. All vehicles have a 5mph bumper but will often take more. So they could not match up that scratch (even on brand new clean bumper) with his vehicle that probably does not even have a scratch. So they could not even issue a ticket to him for following to close unless an officer witnessed it. Other wise he could sue them and win becasue they have no evidence that he was even on that road other than my testimony so there would be a shadow of a doubt to a jury. All he would have to do is have somebody say he was somewhere else. Then... If I persued it personally then he could sue me on several accounts as well and would probably win several thousand dollars becasue it would be my word against his again so there would be a shadow of a doubt."

Retrospect it makes since, other wise anyone going down the road could write down your plate and claim that you bumped them putting a scratch on thier bumper. Or even someone who doesn't like you and may not have ever been on the same road as you could accuse you to make you pay too. So I guess it's as fair as it can be, it just backfires occasionally and is known as the 5mph rule.
The result is if you are doing the posted speed limit of say 70 mph someone can come up behind you at 75 mph, bump you, and get away with it! Unless a police officer sees it, you get it on tape some how, or maybe if you get several other non related non passenger commuters to pull over and willing to testify for you. (Not likely to get anyone not involved to pull over or testify, but even if you did it's not a real strong defense for you but might keep a jury from granting him any awards. But not strong enough to charge him with anything.)

As far as passing I think here you are suppose to flash your passing lights twice and honk. Nobody ever does, but if memory serves me that is how the test book reads.
I don't like to slam people, but every now and again it happens. Here goes.

1) The reason the police refused to take a report is the 'deer ran out in front of me' story. I used to work as a claims adjuster; that's the first thing a person says when they put on the brakes or otherwise create a hazard. You have to remember you're not the first person they've heard the story from. Consider the price of the repair your ticket for creating the hazard; that's what the police did.

2) There's another thread on the forum about someone who was killed because someone put on their brakes to retaliate against another driver. The other driver ran off the road and was ejected from the vehicle and died.

3) Driving in the left lane and not letting other drivers pass is lane squatting. It's illegal in most states--regardless of how fast you are going and what the speed limit is. It makes traffic slower and more hazardous for everyone and it's just plain rude. Move over. It's none of your business how fast the other driver is going.

Whew!

Sorry.

Don't apologize, you said pretty much everything that I said in my post except you directed it to me.

For #1 OK so when he down shifts or brake checks if somebody bumps him, then drives on. What story could he tell the police that would make his outcome differ from my parable?

For #2 Good point, I almost brought that up too.

For #3 I don't know if that was directed at me or not but since that's what we've been telling him and I'm the guy more likely to be tailgating/drafting/bumping the squatter, then I'm going to assume it's not.

Edited to add:
Squatters should either poop or get off the pot!

-Allowed alcoholpromillage went from 0.5% to 0.2% for unexperienced drivers.
(Driverslicence 1-5 years)
And that's a good thing, 0.2% is about the equivalent of less than 1 beer.

- Fines for red light and not wearing seatbelts went up a lot.

- More section controls speed limit

When I see some one in the left lane that has there cruise control set at the exact speed limit or 1 mph under it and absolutely refuses to move over.....

For some reason the Sweetchuck guy from police academy pops into my head???

I have a feeling that this law will get tested early, and then thrown out. I don't have a pet, but if I did, I would most certainly NOT get in microchipped. Just not normal to me. To each their own though.

EDITED TO ADD: Tennessee is apparently trying to shame drunk drivers now, in addition to jail time. Anyone caught driving while drunk will have to undergo 24 hours of community service by picking trash on the roadside while wearing an orange vest that proclaims "DRUNK DRIVER." I say good move!

NYS minimium wage goes from 6.00$ to 6.75$ an hour starting jan 1st. Higher taxes, higher gas prices and buffalo actually has a surplus of money this starting year

Reading the above discussion brings up a question: What do you guys do when someone is tailgaiting you? I hate tailgaters... I have a family, and I intend to keep them as safe as possible. I don't think that an extra 20 feet of road is going to get anyone anywhere any faster. So instead or riding my a$$, back off and pay attention. If I need to hit my brakes to avoid an obstacle in the road, I don't want to have to worry that the idiot on my a$$ is going to take a chance of hurting my kids. That's part of the reason I drive a bigger vehicle. Law of mass tonnage. . But things can still happen...

We had maggie microchipped to increase the likelyhood of her being returned if she were to get lost.
