Best anti virus I have found is AVG free edition. I have been using it for 5 years now and only one has gotten past. The one that got past was my fault for not having auto update on and forgetting to update the database.

My HP has a system recovery CD set that you can use and the computer will either re-install WIN XP or do a complete format and re-install. I had to do it once and it was slick.
