Math Teaser-

Three guys on a business trip notice a hotel room for $30.00/night. Wanting to pocket as much of their per diem, and hotel allowance as possible they stay in the cheap hotel. They check in and each pays $10.00 to cover the $30.00 flat fee.

The men go upstairs.

By the time they were half-way to their rooms, the hotel manager remembers the rooms are on special tonight for $25.00. Therefore, he sends the bell hop up with a $5.00 refund. On his way to the room, the Bell hop thinks- "Three men can't split $5.00 evenly, so I'll keep $2.00 and give them each $1.00 back.", which he did.

Mathematically- each man spent $9.00 for the hotel room. ($9.00 x 3 = $27.00), and the Bell-Hop kept $2.00. $27.00 + $2.00 = $29.00.

How do you account for that last dollar?

From: ???.....depends on the day
Actually....at $25 a room....each of the three men spent $8.33 (8 dollars and 1/3 of a dollar to be precise)....not the $9 as stated in the problem

It was ate up in the price reduction. Had the bel-hop given them the whole 5 spot there wouldn't be a missing dollar. They actually paid 8.33 each for the room with one person kicking in the extra penny. So when the bel-hop gave them each a buck back they paid 9.33 each plus the penny.

30.00-25.00-3.00-2.00+0.00

That one is too easy, here is a card trick I like.

Deck of 52 face down
flip over half the deck (26 cards) one at a time counting them.
Place the flipped/counted stack (of 26) under the other 26 stack.

You now have 52 cards facedown and you have seen the bottom 26, ok?

Make three rows of cards by flipping them over one at a time.
Each row must add up to "ten".
(Ace = 1, Face card = Ten)

example a row could be
(2 Clubs + eight cards = 10)
(5 Diamonds + five cards = 10)
(Queen of Spades + zero cards = 10)

When you have made three rows, add together the first card in each row.
example
(A,A,A) = 3
(K,Q,J) = 30
(5,7,8) = 20
(4,4,4) = 12
K,10,2) = 22

Object of trick = Name the card in the deck that is in (X) location, Where (X) = the sum of the three rows.

This is a real math teaser.
Your 'victim' will wonder how you can name a card that is in a diifferent position by virtue of the random rows.

You could just tell them you committed the 26 cards you flipped to memory,in order, but it's nowhere near that difficult.

You guys are falling for slight of hand.
There is no missing dollar.

The $30 is removed from the equation as the men got $3 back.

Here is what remains:
Each man paid $9
$9 X 3 = $27

Where is the $27?

The Hotel got $25, The Bellhop stuck $2 in his pocket.

Done.

I did a trick very similar to that first one Raoul back in the day. I don't remember it now but same concept. Good one.

Edit: I remember now it had something to do with the face cards and a story about them sleeping together.

Well, not really---

No matter how you slice it, each man has a dollar back, a whole dollar, out of the 10 they each spent, which represents a $9.00 expenditure, leaving three floating dollars, of which only two can be physically accounted for.

That just goes to show that in accounting, 2 + 2=4, is not always 2 + 2=4.

2 + 2 can be whatever you want it to be...

You can't write as many bad checks as I do and still stay out of jail unless you're a math wiz.

Besides I use that old 'missing dollar' trick in my nephews' birthday cards.
I had to because my sister said they wouldn't take birthday checks from me anymore.

The little brats.

The trick is called lucky seven.
The 'story' is just that, a story to throw off your 'victim'.

You flip over, show and count 26.
All you really care about is remembering the seventh card.
When you are done counting out the 26, they go on the bottom.
Now the seventh card becomes the 33rd card (7 + 26)

Now matter how many cards you put in the rows,
you'll always use 33 cards when you follow the steps.

(Three Aces + nine cards on each Ace) = 30 used, 3 Aces equal 3, third card is the 33rd card in your hand.

(Three Tens + zero cards on each ten ) = 3 Three tens = 30 , 30th card is the 33rd card in your hand.

(Three Fives + five cards on each five) = 18 used , 3 fives = 15, 15th card is the 33rd card in your hand.

and so on all combinations add up to 33 and that's the card you know
because you remembered the seventh card which became the 33rd.

The hotel room clerk riddle is just, throw out some numbers and then
ask the wrong question.
