How often should an K&N Air filter be cleaned?

How often should an K&N Air filter be cleaned?
I have had mine on the truck a good 40,000 miles, and on this trip home, ol' girl felt a little asthmatic... I've gotta go get the cleaning kit...
I read the box where it says a dirty K&N filter with 40,000 miles of build-up on it, still performed better than a new, clean, stock filter. It's like she didn't want to go over 80 without some strong right-foot encouragement.
Anyone else have a K&N on, and if how how often do you clean it?
