As everyone stated, the second amendment is not about protection and crime. That is a completely different topic; unfortunately it almost always goes hand in hand with the current topic.
Also, as 01_XLT mentioned: knives. Have you seen the current list of no-no laws for knives? I started looking for a newer pocket knife to carry around; my want list was cut down to 1 or 2 after I read NJ's laws on what is allowed. What makes it more frustrating, is just as guns the *scary sounding ones* are the ones that are not allowed.
The above on knives is treading a fine line on the owning vs. carrying them, much like the guns owning vs. carrying. The laws are a little unclear, but it may be okay to own any type of knife for display/collection only. Which if that is the case makes it irrelevant to the gun debate, but still worth mentioning.
