let's just call it like it is... in Ep4-6, Vader was nothing more than the Emporers thug.
When I watch Ep4, I think Tarkin is one of the few that can talk back to Vader (as was said, Vader had no military rank)

who was the better swordsman. Yoda or Mace Windu?

Windu b!tchslapped the Emporer in a lightsaber duel but yet Yoda had trouble (he had trouble with Dooku too)

The Emporer threw Yoda across the room with force lightning and yet Windu just reflected it back.

 

I have to say that Windu was more physically powerful with regard to his force skills. Yoda was older and probably more powerful in his sensory force skills and communing with the Force. I'm guessing that Yoda's physical skills suffered from rust more than anything else. I seee a Jedi like Mace Windu doing a lot more lightsabre sparring than Yoda. I'll bet Yoda liked to meditate and contemplate the mysteries of the Force. I see Mace Windu as Stonewall Jackson to Yoda Robert E. Lee.

I also wonder if Palpatine was sort of ******* it a little against Mace Windu, not enough to get killed, just enough that Anakin had to get involved and take that final step, cutting off Windu's hand is sort of a big "I'm a Sith now!" moment.

 

The Emperor caught Yoda off guard (Ironic when you come looking for a fight) I'm sure you saw how big Yoda's eyes got when he saw that lightning coming. In Episode II, he caught Dooku's lightning (distance, perhaps) and held it back. In the end, he did the same with the Emperor’s. In the book, he was caught off guard, but he wasn't hurt by the lightning; he used the force to cushion his impact, and played possum. He was expecting the Emperor to walk up on him, gloating over his “easy defeat” of Yoda , and if his plan worked, Yoda would pull out his sabre and "Finish Him".

Yoda would be hard to beat in close quarters because he's so small and quick. Kinda like those midget men fighting The Rock in the movie "The Rundown".

When Yoda attacked the Emperor in those chambers, it is written in the book that the Emperor used the force to [try and] hold Yoda back. Yoda had never fought anyone so powerful in the Force and it was like walking against a "whirlwind" trying to approach the Emperor. Lastly, the Emperor was playing weak for Anakin's benefit- while it may be true he was no match for Mace with a light sabre- surely if 900 year old Yoda hadn't faced anyone as powerful in the force as the Emperor, neither had Windu. I doubt Windu could have stopped that lightning with his bare hands, as had Yoda against Dooku. Even Obi Wan stopped it with the lightsabre.

But, Mace Windu was the head of the Jedi Council, not Yoda, they were both Masters, even though Mace was once Yoda's Padwan (As was Dooku). Before Windu became a Jedi, there were only 6 lightsabre fighting styles. After Windu evolved, he brought his own style, which became the 7th style. No one else used it, and Yoda didn't like Windu using it because the style was so aggressive it was acutely akin to the dark side.

Going back to the Senate, Yoda had a chance against the Emperor but, the lightning blast carried Yoda up higher and further away than it did the Emperor, because Yoda was so small & light, that's how the Emporer landed safely, and Yoda ended up falling... Had Yoda landed closer to the Emperor- with his light sabre, it would have been over...

Who knows, Mace Windu may not be dead... He was still yelling as he fell, but he jumped from a high spot in Episode 2- who knows, we didn't actually see a body. We all know Luke too a lot of volts before Vader finally decided to save his son.
