New Gun

Here is my new toy.

It's a Winchester Model 70 Stealth II. Caliber is 223 WSSM (Winchester Super Short Magnum)

It has a 26" heavy barrel. Lots of steel, little hole.

Here is the 223 WSSM round on the left. Standard 30-06 Springfield on right for comparison.

I will be taking it to the range tomorrow to sight it in. I have shot it a few times already to get a feel for it. It kicks more than I expected. Especially for such a heavy gun.

Nice!

Be ready for the flames from the anti .22 crowd that says anything .22 is worthless.
Despite it's high speed, flat travel, and penetration qualities.

I wouldn't say worthless, but it's not legal to take large game with it in many, if not all states. Would just irritate an elk.

Great for reaching out and touching rabbits though. Old Thumper would be easy pickings at 200+ yards or so.

Nice looking gun. Enjoy!

Here you can use any center fire cartridge.
bb, pellet, or .22lr is pretty much the only things not allowed for large game.
You can even use a .22 mag if you want to.
Say that jokingly but I know many deer have actually been taken with .22 mag, some in season and some out.

Nice one! I have to say I actually like the lil smallbores. I shoot a Remington 700BDL .223 Rem and it's a sweet gun to shoot. Easy 1" groups at 100yds, very flat shooting, and is easy on the shoulder. WSSM must be a very flat shooter. I've always wanted a good heavy-barrel .22-250 myself.

Those make great coyote guns, especially in wide open fields where 400-500 yard shots are not unheard of. They'll take down deer too.

I agree though with the elk, they would just sneeze and move on

Prairie dog at 245 yds. with a very similar rifle (different scope, Black Hills ammunition).

I have never been prairie dog huntin', I want to so bad! I need to do it before my eyes get bad and/or I lose my nerves. "Already starting to shake slightly if I don't concentrate on it." As long as I am doing something I have to concentrate on then I don't but when I'm relaxed. I'm not as steady as I use to be.

Went to the range today to sight in the rifle. Was getting satisfactory results first, but couln't seem to get it dialed in. I discovered when I was almost out of ammo that my scope wasn't tight enough in the rings and it was moving. Tightened it up and was better, but had to save some ammo for some coyotes.

It was a cold day at the range for shooting. A couple of degrees below freezing. I was not shooting as well as I usually do, reason unknown. But a bad day at the range is better than a good day at work!

Cool rig. I've read those things can be kinda hard on barrels though. What kinda scope is on that thing?

Good hunting nonetheless. Poor ol' Wile E. Coyote won't know what hit him...

Scope is Bushnell Banner 6-24X AO Mildot. This was installed temporarily. I have a one piece base on order and plan on getting some quality rings when I decide what scope to put on there.

I too had read some bad press concerning barrel life. I also read that this was misleading. They say the production rifles have a chrome lined bore and barrel life is similar to a 22-250. So I took a gamble and decided to be a guinnea pig. My original choice was a Rem Model 700 VSSF II in 22-250. We'll see how it turns out.
