Shot one last week...high velocity, blows right through, not a spectacular splatter like a 22/250 or 308 (at least on the chubby lil' South Dakota prairie dogs we were shooting...

Definitely recommend hearing protection when shooting, it has such a high pitched and strong crack off the muzzle.

Overall, a nice gun, but ammo is too overpriced for now because it's still not that common, and it's not really worth the cost for reloading yet either. If it catches on and the economy of scale makes it more affordable for what it is, I'd look at it again, but right now I'm not that excited about it for p.dogs vs. guns that are more flexible (AR15, etc.)

I asume your talking about either the .17 HMR or the 17 Mach2 since they are the only "new" 17s out. In either case neither one is reloadable because they are both rimfires. The .17 Rem is a centerfire but its been out a long time.

Back to the subject...nice rifle. The WSSMs are pretty popular right now and suprisingly I don't have one yet...I dont know why though. I picked up a couple "new" guns this weekend aswell. I got a stainless Styer SBS Prohunter in .308 (pretty rare to find one in stainless) and a Remington 700 Sendero (stainless with a fluted heavy barrel) in 300 Ultra Mag.

The Steyr:

I have a silver Nikon 4.5x14x44 I think I am going to put on the Sendero and I am not sure what I am going to put on the Steyr. I have a silver Burris 3x9x40 and a silver Leupold VxII 3x9x40 but neither really look right on it so I am leaning toward getting a silver 3.5x10x50 Zeiss for it. The Zeiss is closer to the right color.

Cool SST! love that UltraMag. I almost bought a .300 Ultramag instead of this one. Being up here in Canada we don't have the selection of guns available to us that I think you guys in the U.S. have. I originally wanted a M70 Stealth II in 243 WSSM. I tried several gun shops and noone had one. They could order it out of the U.S.A. but it could have taken months to get in. So I thought I would try a 223 WSSM. The gun shop said he could get one in 2 weeks so I said go for it. 3 weeks later they still didn't have it and didn't know when it would be in. So I planned a trip to the city and decided I wasn't coming back without a new gun. They had a nice Rem 700 Police in 300 ultramag. I decided to get that one. But on the day before I left my 223 arrived, so I bought that.

Let us know how that 300 shoots. My next rifle is going to be a thumper like that.

Thanks...I actually have a Remington 700 in 338 Ultra Mag too...its the higher end one with the nice stock and the engraved reciever and floor plate (I think Rem refers to at as being embelished...I think they stopped making them in 2000). I bought it because I have the same gun in .222...kind of a both ends of the spectrum thing. The 338 Ultra is one hell of a gun though. I shoot a lot of magnum caliber rifles offten (mostly 7 Mags and 300 Win Mags) and I have to say the recoil on it is something else. The first time I shot it it actually stunned me it kicked so hard. Really the 338 is way to much gun for down here but it would be nice up there were you are for sure. I HOPE that 300 Ultra is not as bad to shoot being the Sendero weighs so much. I am going to use it to do some long range shooting across peanut fields for white tails....I have heard they shoot fairly flat up to 600 yards (only a 3in drop if the scope is set in at 200 yards). I had a chance to pickup another 338 Ultra when I bought the two pictured above...it was a Browning A-Bolt Medalion. It looked like it was brand new and the guy only wanted $650 for it (and I probably could have go it for closer to $550). Had it had a BOSS system on it to reduce the recoil I would have jumbed on it but as it was I passed...I kind of regret not getting it though. I almost always buy a Medalion when I find a good clean one. I did do very good on the Steyr and the Sendero...$1000 for both out the door. They are easily $850 a piece guns..infact a Sendero just like the one I got just sold for $850 on Gunbroker.com yesterday.
Your right though...down here you can go to a gun show and always find something you want. I usually buy 2 or 3 guns a month. I trade a sell the ones I get good deals on but dont really want. I think I have about 7 Remingtons (all 700 variants) right now but I mostly collect Brownings and Rugers. Ruger #1s are my favorite...I have 17 of them.
Good luck with the 223 WSSM...its certainly a hot little round and will take down most anything as long as the bullet placement is right. I killed 2 wild hogs a few months ago with a 17HMR Ruger MKII. I was tree stand hunting a automatic feeder. All you have to do is waite for a right between the eyes shot and they both dropped like a rock at around 35-40 yards.

I don't tend to collect anything in particular, I've got a bit of everything. I do have a Ruger 10/22 all fancied up though. I think my next rifle will be a Weatherby, maybe a .378. Or a Ruger #1 in 416 Rigby. Something along those lines.

Very nice. I'm a remington fan, but that's a nice looking tackdriver you have there.

You only have one 10/22, that seems unamerican. I think i have 6 or so invarious configurations.

Buy the ruger #1 you will be happier, especially if you want something that is accurate.

Ehhh... I am unamerican. I'm Canadian. I do have 5 .22 LRs but only one of them is a 10/22. I need to get one of everything before I can justify more than one of anything. LOL!

Well I'm American and I don't have a single 10/22. I do have 2 Marlin model 60's though. Actually one's a Glenfield, but it was made by Marlin. I've been meaning to get a 10/22, I swear.

WELL...I guess I am all American. I have 3 10/22s....but this is my favorite one:

I totaly reworked the action and trigger, it has a Fajen stock, a Green Mounted fluted bull barrel and a Nikon 4.5x14x44 Mil-dot scope w/Leoupold bases and rings (not the more common Weaver style base and rings). Trust me this one is a true tack driver!!!

Now if you want to drive some tacks from a couple hundred yards away this is the ticket:

It is of course a Ruger #1V (V designates that it has a heavy target barrel) in 22-250 with a Leupold 12x scope (fine cross hairs w/target dot). This is one of my favorite shooters!

Sorry, most of the time I don't look where people are from.
