I had cable and switched to DSL to save almost $20 a month. It might be a little slower but nothing I notice. I've had absolutely no problems with it. Comcast can kiss my a$$. They've called me every other month since I dropped the cable modem offering a 'special' rate. The special rate only lasts 6 months then it's back to $45 bucks a month. No friggin' way. The DSL works great.

DSL does offer lower bandwidth than cable but it is more secure, doesn't bog down under heavy load like cable and costs less. I use cable but wouldnt say DSL sucks.

DSL for me.. I can't get cable, satelite is to high, so DSL is my only Broad band option.

Deep Broadcasters Voice: Sprint DSL brought to you by Earthlink.
"again my only option."

I got the 1.5 and I am twice as fast as my brother and friends that claim they are "better" with thier cable connections. I don't know wha they consider better.. They all admit that I am faster, I have never been down. So what is better than fast and reliable? They are all fighting for band width against thier neighbors. Mom and dad dropped the party line phone when I was a little kid, I'm not about to buy party line internet.

Call you local phone company and see if DSL is available for you.

Lower bandwidth? Try A TON less bandwidth, and it WILL bog down under heavy load just like any other internet service. However, the gobs of extra bandwidth you get with cable it's a moot point. Plus, you really gotta be within that 1200' of the pop to get the good speeds. And the 'dedicated' bandwidth DSL ISPs babble about it between you & the pop, after that it's shared bandwidth baby!!!

I rag on DSL since it's nothing more than a modem on some bad 'roids and cannot satisfy my Internet-**** download habits. Try pulling down gigabytes worth of data 'n stuff and see how you feel about DSL.

And don't even get me started on "more secure"... I'm going to pretend I didn't even read that...

If you MUST go with dial-up, check out PeoplePC.com
Cheap rates, lots of access lines and almost tolerable customer service (as opposed to the non-service you get with most of the discount internet providers).
Phone number is 1-800-peoplepc I think. They can talk you through setup.

IF you checked the company the provides your phone service and the company the provides your cable TV service and neither is available then you're stuck with dialup. You should be able to get something in the $10-$15 a month range for dialup. Try Netzero.com, Netscape.com, or a local provider. Don't do AOL, it's way overpriced.

You can look into a satelite provider, but it's probably still really expensive. Do a web search on "satelite internet provider".

PSS - That's a horrible test site, the download file is WAY to small to get a good measure of throughput. Sustained downloads is where it's at. Cable/DSL would be very similar and hell even ISDN would fair well on that test. The larger the file, the more cable shines...
