WOOOHOOO, I'm really excited... i finally bought my F150. Ive been wanting one for a really long time, so I finally went out and bought a 97 F150 XLT. I freaking love it!! Anyway, a couple things are missing and or broken... i was wondering if anyone knew the part number for the temperature **** on the HVAC. (its missing). Also, the headliner is starting to droop.... what are the options here?
thanks!!!
thanks!!!
Hello and welcome,
Tighten your lug nuts and check you carburater fluid, because it's always a wild ride around here. So you'll want to be ready for anything these clowns might throu at you!
Part number:
97 F150 temperature control **** @ the salvage yard.
Headliner:
Rip it out
Seriously though on the headliner, check all the seals (ie doors, rear window, windshield, and rear high mount tail light.) before replacing the headliner. Chances are high that there is a slight leak some where that has caused the glue to release and fall.

Arent they though....
I love going to the salvage yard.... They are like a candy store for men.
Sometimes it's not worth it... always get prices of a new one before buying one used... Have seen a few things actually higher than new from a dealer....
But for this it is a pretty safe gamble. Eventually you pretty well know if it's worth it or not.
Thanks for the replies. I had not thought of using a salvage yard yet... good idea. hmm, specs: 97 white XLT with tan cloth. 60/40 bench with the flip down console. 4.6L, 2WD auto. The sheet in the window mentioned a tow package, but I only found a ball on the bumper (no reciever) and a trailer plug--4pins i think. After I bought it, i discovered the CD changer...woohoo, that was a nice surprise. I really like driving this truck--it friggin awesome. Its got 150k miles, and I would not have gotten it had I not read the 100000 mile club thread and had read about all these good running trucks with tons of miles. Paid $6k for it, and I'm really satisfied with it.
... which reminds me... Is there a way to tell if the engine in the truck is the original. (tranny too for that matter)??? It has high miles, but runs like its brand-new, and the engine is spotless. Not a drop of oil, dirt or stain anywhere. Id swear it was a new engine. Is there a way to tell???

Welcome dude!
Headliners are cheap. They are also very easy for those who have done lots of them, but a rookie can easily screw it up on the first try. New headliners are fairly easy to find for $100 or less. Check around at your local auto upholstery and finer auto detail places. Look at some of their previous work before giving them the go-ahead. Make sure they don't lose or strip out half the trim screws.

I was lucky enough to see mine before it got detailed. It was dusty but not greasy. So I knew it either didnt have any leaks OR the PO had cleaned it before he traded it in. But there was enough surface rust on the under carriage that I knew it couldn't leak very bad if it leaked at all.
You can run a VIN check and that will tell you if it is the same block or not but it wont tell you if it has been rebuilt. You can run a car fax and that will tell you anything that has been done "IE rebuilt, wrecked, etc." but only by a dealer. If an independant mechanic or the PO did it them selfs then it wouldnt show up there either.
Best thing to do now... if it's running then drive it... If it quits, fix it!
Get the PO's name and number fromt the dealer and call them. Then ask them about it.
We almost always do that before buying a pre owned vehicle. Ask them if anything major has been replaced/rebuilt/had major work (motor, tranny, rear end etc) what kind of maitence they've done with it/to it, any problems theyve encountered etc. Just about anything you can learn from them.
Might help to tell them your just looking at it and havent bought it yet. Sometimes they will tell you a little more that way.
Good luck with the truck and welcome!
