Post Our lads rescue the Ruskie Sub

I see on the news that the trapped Russian Submarine just got rescued by the Royal Navy.
Glad to see that they learned the lessons from the Kursk fiasco and actually asked for help this time.

Makes you proud to be British.

I've been impressed with the position Mr. Blair (and hopefully more of the British citizenry) has been taking since their terrorist events -- seems to be more of an "American" tack against extremist Muslims than a "Euro" tack (?).

I will never understand the "bury your head in the sand and/or look the other way" mentality that so much of the European continent has taken against the terrorists!

It's all about the queen
Brits like to linger on the Royal family and such. Understandable since that's the way they were governed for centuries.

Edit: oh GJ btw to the Brits and American assistants on saving those sailors. Putin made the right call on not letting the "national pride" get in the way of saving some lives.

Now that IS funny

Do they actually teach History in schools these days?

BTW, H.M.S. stands for His (or Her) Majesties Ship, not service.
The cost of the Monarchy is less than $1 per person per year. I should imagine that the President costs as much as a Monarch.

Not too sure about that; but, for a few thousand, you can have his ear during elections.

They do teach history "these days" but usually when England comes up its just about how we, the Americans, where outnumbered, had virtually no national army, and had a massive lack of arms/ammunition, and still defeated HER MAJESTIES ROYAL analrangers. Then once again in the War of 1812.

...class dismissed

It changes either when the Monarch abdicates (like Edward 8th) or they die.
Then the oldest son becomes King. If there are no male heirs to the throne, then the oldest daughter becomes Queen.
When Queen Elizabeth dies, Prince Charles will become King. If he dies before the Queen, it will be his son Prince William.

The King or Queen is head of state but actually holds little power.
They can ask/tell the Prime Minister to disolve parliament but then we have to have an election.
The Monarch cannot pass laws, raise taxes or anything else.
It's more of a figurehead thing really.

Not really, no.

The only way that would really happen was if there was no line of sucession in that family whatsoever or the reigning monarch was removed by parliament (and hence the people) for misgovernment. A bit like being impeached in the USA.

The House of Windsor has a line of succesion of over 50 people so unless they were all killed or something, no family takeovers "mafia style"

The windsor house is acually more german than english
Winchester man sorry but actually we outnumbered them we also suffered horrible casualties. They were kicking the ***** out of us for a very long time.
But we still WON.
The nation that has come the closest to actually defeating the United States is the Confederate States of America.
